Jorge Santiago tells Tatame that he thinks he can submit BJJ ace, Demian Maia, in their upcoming bout at UFC 136 in Houston this October: How are your training for the fight going? Right after the fight was over (against Brian Stann), I took some time off and started training it step by step. I’m still not playing his game, I’m just doing a strong basic preparation. I hope to do a great fight with him. Demian wants to show his striking, so I’ll enjoy trading punches with him too. Do you believe he’ll want to bang with you? I don’t know. For what I could tell about his last fight, he really likes striking, but he’s strongest point is his Jiu-Jitsu. If we must strike, let’s do it. What are your thoughts about his Jiu-Jitsu? He has an excellent ground game. I’ve watched his fights for a long time, he has a good ground game, but mine ain’t any worst. I still haven’t had the chance to show it in MMA, but I can fight him on the floor. My ground game is focused in MMA, I don’t only work on the guard, use it to sweep… If you are not careful, I’ll get you and you’ll tap out. You’re not afraid of Demian while on the floor? No… If he makes a mistake, I’ll submit him. UFC 136 coverage

Demian Maia, speaking to MMA Junkie following the TUF 12 Finale, compliments Kendall Grove on his BJJ defense: "I'm happy because I won, of course," Maia said. "I wanted to submit him in this fight, but Kendall was smart. At one point I was baiting him to go to the side when I was on his back because I wanted to switch to the arm-and-neck submission. "He didn't go even though his corner was saying, 'Go to the side, go to the side. Escape your hips.' He was not escaping, and I was like, '[Expletive]!' After the fight, he said to me, 'You wanted me escape my hips to that side so you could switch to that submission.' I said, 'Yeah, you're smart.'"

Demian Maia is on the side of Chael Sonnen in the middleweight title fight at UFC 117, and not his fellow Brazilian, Anderson Silva, as he tells Tatame: "If I had to chose, I’d cheer for Sonnen, making an exception because I always want the Brazilians to win, but this time I have to be at Sonnen’s side, because I don’t admire the other one." Maia Reflects on Silva's UFC 112 Antics: Tapology: After the fight, Silva used your comment on the Countdown show about taking his leg as his reasoning for acting the way he did. Do you think that is really the reason for his behavior? Maia: Of course it’s not. You can see on every Countdown they need to get the people excited and I think in my Countdown nobody was talking bull____ about each other. It was very respectful and I just said that because the guys ask you to add more promotion and everything. It’s normal. Everybody does that. The beautiful thing of this sport is that everybody does the promotion, but after the fight they respect each other because it’s not easy to go there and fight. It’s obviously an excuse, but I don’t know why he behaved like that. Maybe there is too much pressure on him. For me, he’s just a fake guy, you know? He says something in front of you and then after he says another thing. He pretends to be humble, but the worst thing is when you fake that. He pretends to be a really nice guy and everything, but inside he’s really not like that.

Greg Jackson talks about Anderson Silva's performance at UFC 112: "I actually really enjoyed the first part of the fight, with Anderson changing up his style, like he would do Machida, then he would kind of do the Diaz brothers' thing, then Muhammad Ali." "I was actually very entertained with all the different styles that he was emulating as he was going after him. And then for the last half of the fight, I think he got so far ahead he played it smart, or he got tired. One way or the other, to me, it's not a disgrace at all. It was a fight and sometimes you look great and sometimes you have one with a little more grinding. But playing it smart or getting tired and not engaging because you're a little tired isn't a disgrace to me." -- download The Fight Show with Mauro Ranallo podcast here. Demian Maia says Anderson Silva called him a Momma's Boy: "I just thought it was disrespectful for him to swear at me during the fight, saying things like, ‘You (explicative) momma’s boy, show me your Jiu-Jitsu.’ That type of stuff. I felt it was disrespectful and unnecessary. Aside from that, it was a normal fight." "He begged my forgiveness and I feel everyone makes mistakes, tha’s normal. I feel something influenced him afterwards and he came up with that statement about me having disrespected him. I never made any strong statements and, even if I had, it would have been to promote the fight, which is normal. The fight ends and the two fighters embrace" HT: Gracie Mag -- Photo by Tracy Lee UFC 112 Coverage
