Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes

"Obviously, Georges St. Pierre is a tremendous fighter, but I had a real bad night at the same time he had a real good night. When that happens, you saw what the result can be. But I did get into some good positions and I saw some things, but I couldn't do what I knew I needed to do."

"To be honest, I like the matchup (against Thiago Alves at UFC 85)," "He's a stand-up guy. On the ground, he's not nearly as dangerous. I'll be stronger, I believe I'll be the better wrestler and I like the fact he's kind of a slow starter. I think I can wear him out before he gets going."

"I've pulled out some of the old Matt Hughes tapes and I'm trying to get back to being that fighter." "Nobody should write me off just yet."

-- Matt Hughes wants to prove his time hasn't passed.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
Who's writing him off? Thiago can't wrestle for jack, it's gonna be a carbon copy of the Fitch fight.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
Well, I'd write him off in a fight against GSP. :-)

When somebody has your number, it's pretty much over. Ask Chuck re: Rampage or Franklin re: Silva.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
Very true.  Sometimes one style just cancels out another, which is the case for Hughes vs GSP.  9/10 GSP wins that fight.  Actually, at this point going forward, GSP would probably win the next 100 times against Hughes.  Still, Hughes has a good chance in this next fight so long as he can take it to the ground.  I think in the past Hughes was bored and wanted to knock people out, but I think now he's realized he should return to his wrestling and his GnP because that's his bread and butter.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
Another underestimation of Alves's skillset once again. A lot of people picked Parisyan, and Alves showed his power once again to be formidable. Hughes has terrible standup, and one knee to the head is going to be enough for Alves to win. Hughes better hope he has a better strategy to takedown Alves. On the ground, he can definitely win it, but Alves has a good chance here.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
People picked Karo for a reason. Thiago can hang with mid-level guys like Hironaka and Lytle but he cracked against Fisher and then got absolutely blown out by Fitch, getting KOed twice in about five seconds.

Unlike Karo, Matt isn't gonna get cute and try to box Thiago. He's gonna pound him out.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
How is it that, even when he doesn't say anything particularly controversial, Hughes still somehow sounds like a dick?

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
Perhaps because you're predisposed toward disliking him and thus look for fault in anything he says.  Maybe.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
I dunno - he's one of my favorite fighters, but I still think it might be that he's kind of a dick. I'm not fond of the god-bothering, and his book? That was dickish.

Re: Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
This does have all of the makings of a carbon copy of the Alves/Fitch fight.  Alves has to possibe strategies here: (1) have a knee ready for when Matt shoots; (2) come out throwing bombs when Hughes tries to do the classic 30 seconds of standup so you can fool yourself into thinking you have tricked your opponent into thinking you have no intention of taking the fight to the ground (sneaky, sneaky).
