Affliction Fumbles Again

Five Ounces has the scoop:

On Saturday afternoon, FiveOuncesOfPain.com was informed by a source that a proposed deal between Affliction and HDNet appeared to have fallen through. As a result, Affliction was not able to finalize an agreement to book the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas for its first show.

The event, which is slated to be headlined by Fedor Emelianenko taking on Tim Sylvia, could now be held at The Pond in Anaheim, Calif., instead. That revelation was made by current UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture while appearing Saturday night as a guest on "Rear Naked Radio" on 105.3 FM in Dallas.

So now they've botched their deal with HDNet and burned a relationship with Mark Cuban. Add this to the continuing question marks about Fedor AND the collapse of Affliction's partnership with Golden Boy Promotions and you've got one FUBAR'd deal. To me, the Golden Boy deal was the real showstopper as it very likely would've brought an HBO deal along with it.

I'd say Dana White is sleeping easy this Sunday morning.

Just goes to show just how tough it is to get these types of things going.  Say what you want about Dana, but the guy knows his MMA business.

Re: Affliction Fumbles Again
The economy is in the gutter.  I bet a bunch of these companies who saw tons of cash in MMA promotions are gonna back off since they don't have easy access to cash anymore.

I'm sad.... if only because this news may render this great little youtube clip obsolete:

Juno does MMA

This news is a bit frustrating.... i went on a long rant about it, too long to post here but check it out here

Re: Affliction Fumbles Again
I wanted to post it to the diaries but didn't know if it was front page worthy, i found this thing hilarious...... i especially like the part about fedor petting the goose.......someone in her comments said, little lady he's not petting that goose, he's arm-barring it....which had me doing a spit take.....

Re: Affliction Fumbles Again
Way to go Affliction. You not only burned your bridge with UFC but now no one will ever take your serious as a fight promotion.....EVER.

Should have stuck to making t-shirts.

Re: Affliction Fumbles Again
Any promotion built with the thought of having one great fight then "it all will come together after" is severely mistaken and will never succeed.

They need to start small and get a roster and give the production some value and the teams working together through the beginning times to build the framework necessary. Marketing included, needs to all become a mature product before you can even attempt to put together a grand show to directly compete with the UFC.

It is not an overnight process, and the people who own these MMA organizations should start treating each unique element of their organization as an individual product, instead of lumping together a bunch of immature portions into an inadequate creation and failing spectacularly, and letting us down as fans.

Re: Affliction Fumbles Again
"In other Affliction-related news, Five Ounces of Pain has also learned that EliteXC has joined the UFC as the second major North American mixed martial arts promotion to ban its fighters from wearing Affliction clothing during cage-walk entrances."

Makes sense.
