Mike Sloan Takes a Dig

He just can't help himself, can he? To wit:

Virtually nothing within Mother Earth's embrace is as predictable as the fight fan.

In the aftermath of hundreds of mixed martial arts events and thousands of fights, it has become effortless, if not second nature, to almost directly quote imminent "expert" blog analyses, myopic e-mails and cluttered chat room banter rooted firmly in kneejerk reactions.

I suggest the fight world take a collective deep breath, hold it in a while and let the performances of the fighters and the outcomes of contests marinate in its mind.

In other words: Let's calm down just a little bit, shall we?

I suppose the call for sober and thoughtful analysis post-fight is correct, but there are better ways to do it. First, use "eminent" instead of "imminent", Mr. Sloan. Second, don't write the most "eminently" forgettable column on Sherdog while chiding those in the blogosphere who write, watch and research every single day. That might help, you know, your credibility and stuff.

Re: Mike Sloan Takes a Dig
Love it ... first he writes a banal little story about how Nick Diaz is just so damn amazing, forgetting how he sucked ass against Mike Aina and got completely tooled by KJ Noons. Then he says "Let's all calm down and stop writing about things you don't know about" and follows that up by DETERMINING THE OUTCOME OF A FANTASY MATCHUP.

I'm hoping this article is either done with a degree of tongue in cheek or if Sloan is just upping the interest level by writing controversially stupid crap.

It has only taken a week or two to demonstrate just how much crap Josh Gross was able to filter off the site when he was with Sherdog.

Re: Mike Sloan Takes a Dig
I don't think his dig is nothing to get upset about, he is stating what does happen at times in the mixed martial arts media.

That said, his article is highly laughable on the whole "Nick Diaz is awesome" and Anderson Silva tooling GSP like GSP is a punching dummy, when fightlinker has pointed out above that THIS IS A FANTASTY MATCH-UP THAT HAS NEVER TAKEN PLACE. Worse part, this is the same guy that proudly proclaimed that Diego Sanchez would take GSP to the limit in a fight, when they fight has ever yet to happen. Really conflicting views here for the reader to see.

As for the "imminent/eminent" argument look, I think he was talking about as soon as a fight is over, one can already predict in a way what certain blogs (yours included) are going to say. I don't think he was talking about one blog sticking out from the other.

Re: Mike Sloan Takes a Dig
Yeah, maybe. The problem is that he just lumps "blog analyses" together as if we all say the same thing. Anyone who pays even half attention to the MMA blog scene can tell you the opinions tend to vary quite considerably.

And then the "expert" dig just annoyed me. So sanctimonious for a guy who isn't known for his "expert" analysis either.

Re: Mike Sloan Takes a Dig
There's a reason why this isn't his full-time job.  The first time I read an article by Sloan on Sherdog I shook my head and questioned why exactly he was being employed by them.

Re: Mike Sloan Takes a Dig
I didn't even notice the shout-out to the blogosphere when I read the article because I was too busy scratching my head as to why he would start off declaring Nick Diaz to be one of the best in the universe because of his fight the night before, while, in the same breadth, telling the silly little MMA fans to stop getting carried away after watching a fight and declaring the winner to be the best in the universe.

Re: Mike Sloan Takes a Dig
Yeah, that was kinda... yikes. Josh Gross was a terrible radio personality but I'm coming to realize he was a pretty good editor.
