Zuffa's Dangerous Summer

Zuffa will be on dangerous ground this summer, and by the time August rolls around, the shape of the MMA business could be completely changed, or Zuffa could emerge as the uncontested and permanent leader.

The first dangerous event for Zuffa is coming up soon, and that is the CBS Elite XC show with Kimbo Slice.  According to Dave Meltzer, Kimbo Slice is actually going to get a cover story on ESPN magazine.  The man is becoming a phenomenon, and it's actually sad how badly Zuffa misread his potential.  This should help increase the buzz for the CBS debut show.  Regardless of the outcome of that show, it is bad for Zuffa either way.  If the show is a hit they have a major competitor, if it fails it will tarnish MMA's reputation as a broadcast draw for years.  Still, they are surely hoping it fails.  The success of this show may also determine whether or not they make a last ditch effort to keep Tito Ortiz.

In July, Affliction and Mark Cuban will put on a PPV show with Fedor headlining against Tim Sylvia.  It's not all finalized yet, so I wouldn't be surprised if it falls apart, but this is a big one too.  Cuban has big money, and this will really test the value of Sylvia without the UFC brand, and Fedor in the US.  I think the show will sell out, but I don't expect it will do a lot of PPV buys.  My best guess is 30-45,000.  If Fedor loses, Randy's entire gambit is a wash, and it would be a huge victory for Zuffa in terms of maintaining a stranglehold on big fights.

The other big summer event is going to be what happens when Randy's promotional contract expires.  Sometimes over the spring or in the summer a court will make an initial declaratory judgment on Randy's contractual status as a fighter.  The two sides are battling over removal issues at the moment, because Cuban's people pulled a clever legal trick to manipulate jurisdiction to keep it out of federal court.

By the time August rolls around, we could have 2 major competitors to The UFC and a free Randy Couture on the road to facing Fedor for one of them, or we could have a situation where both flop, Randy loses his case, Fedor loses his fight, and Zuffa emerges supreme.  Or, most likely, we will have some kind of combination of the above, leaving things murky.  It should be an interesting summer.

Re: Zuffa's Dangerous Summer
Good article Rome, but you forgot to mention Zuffa's legal problems, which could be another massive thorn in Zuffa's side.

Sorry, got my articles mixed up. Please delete my above comment.

EXC is gonna fail horribly in the ratings, it won't even pull a 1.

Re: Zuffa's Dangerous Summer
It's true Fedor and Sylvia don't have huge drawing power, but I think Mark Cuban can do a lot more than 40K PPV buys and probably has a much higher goal.

Your understanding of this may be completely different than mine.

As I understand it, Cuban's only involvement is that HDNet will be broadcasting it and thus have paid a rights fee.

I don't think this is on ppv, but HDNet.

Re: Zuffa's Dangerous Summer
Zuffa's legal problems could potentially be the biggest story this year if the Xyience stockholders and Bergeron's counter claims are investigated thoroughly.

In fact, the Fertittas could very well become the subject of a probe in the Xyience case, and the Fertittas renowned name around Las Vegas certainly won't help matters.

I won't go into full detail on the case, but Zuffa really screwed up by using Zyen and masking what they were doing with Xyience in that whole deal. Misrepresentation of intent can strangely become a much bigger issue as the court proceedings move on.

Re: Zuffa's Dangerous Summer
Elite XC/CBS deal will fail miserably, and it will not tarnish MMAs broadcast reputation. After all EXC is the minor leagues compared to the UFC, and if you dont think that Dana can make that argument to ANY network exec, then you're crazy. Also the Affliction/HDNET folks will find out quickly that the Fedor/Sylvia and Fedor/Couture fights will only appeal to us hardcores. They do not have the outlet of advetising to appeal to the casual fan. I'm quite sure Dana has a deal with Spike to not allow competing promotions to advertise during the broadast of TUF. Which leaves them to advertise on non-MMA shows, or MMA shows and websites that are frequented by hardcores like us anyway.

Re: Zuffa's Dangerous Summer
1) You're underestimating the promotional power of Cuban. He'll be able to advertise and he'll reach large audiences. 2) If MMA stiffs on CBS, Dana won't be having any conversations with network execs for a long long time to come. Those guys are busy, shallow and interested in following the herd, not making long thought out decisions based on painstaking research.

Re: Zuffa's Dangerous Summer
I respectfully disagree. Dana White has FACT BASED DATA, PPV buys, profitable bottom line, and over a million viewers a week watching his reality show on a little known cable network. Has EXC even had a PPV? Are they profitable? Do they have blue chip sponsors? And as for Mark Cuban, I am unaware of anything that he has ever promoted besides a basketball team, which is already an american staple, with plenty of network coverage. All he had to do was build a winning team, which he did. But if his promotional power was soooo strong then HDNET fights would already be competing with the UFC on a major level. They are not.

I think you're great overstating the promotional power of Cuban and impact an EXC failure would have on the UFC.

I'm certainly frequently wrong but time will tell on this one.

It's all just speculation at this point.  We'll have to wait quite a while to see who was right.
