July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia

Finally Fedor's fighting a top guy again:

Top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will fight Tim Sylvia on July 19. The Russian mixed martial arts champion confirmed the bout to Sherdog.com on Tuesday.

"[Sylvia] is a good fighter, a strong fighter, the former UFC heavyweight champion, which is important," Emelianenko said via telephone from Stary Oskol, Russia. "I am looking forward to fighting him and training hard for this fight."

While Emelianenko was short on details, Sherdog.com has learned through sources close to the negotiations that Fedor-Sylvia would headline a card tentatively scheduled for the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, the home base of HDNet Fights.

Attempts to confirm the fight with HDNet went unreturned, however sources indicate the bout will air on the Mark Cuban-owned network and is rumored to be promoted by Affliction, a clothing brand closely tied to MMA.

Ring or cage is my first question... either way, let's go Big Tim!

Update [2008-4-8 21:4:56 by Luke Thomas]:: Sam Caplan does some digging and gives us an update:

MMAWeekly.com later issued a report of their own, which included a quote from Sylvia’s manager, Monte Cox. Cox would not confirm or deny the report, however, he did say Sylvia was open to the idea of a bout against Fedor but that nothing has been signed.

The MMA Weekly and Sherdog reports vary slightly, as Sherdog quotes Fedor as confirming the fight while MMA Weekly quotes Sylvia’s camp as saying nothing has been signed.

As of Tuesday evening, all indications made to FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) were that a deal had yet to be signed but could be finalized shortly. Sources also indicate that while HDNet could be involved, the initial airing of the event would most likely take place on pay-per-view. We have also learned that a very strong undercard is being planned for the event as well.

Didn't take Monte Cox too long to make some noise.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
It did take a while since the M-1 thing, but at least now he's saving some face.

Huh...I'm not getting my hopes up.  I just have that "something will go wrong" feeling.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
Here's something to consider: what if Fedor losses? What would that do to Randy's whole effort to leave the UFC to fight the alleged p4p best in the world? If Sylvia KO's him, does that mean Couture has been wasting his time this entire time?

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
If Sylvia beats Fedor just think about this...Fedor lost to Sylvia who lost to Nogueira who lost to Fedor.

Yay!  More confusion!

Awesome...now my brain has exploded.

Thanks Brent.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
If the sport of MMA doesn't start getting some more guys like Cox that want to put together cross-promotional fights, it will forever be a sport firmly stuck in the 'fringe.'

Hopefully this fight has some traction and it doesn't fall by the boards.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
Brent, you just gave me a headache, lol.

This is awesome news.

Anyone have any idea about ppv/HDnet or what??

Am I the only one that would actually rather see this (and a couple of others) than Fedor/Randy??

This definitely can make a big splash for a new promotion!

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
I'm a bit hesitant here... is this actually going to be under Monte's new promotion? Or is this going to fall under the Affliction deal or logically HDNet since it will be in the American Airlines arena?

I can't see Monte throwing that kind of money around already, especially after the recent divide between the two sides. His bottom line would hurt pretty badly.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
looks to be affliction in co-operation with cuban and hdnet...... i don't think monte's adrenaline mma is tied in with this.  I think the only tie monte has to this is his role as manger of tim.....

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
Probably correct.

Promotion--Affliction w/HDnet fights & Adrenaline MMA

Money--Mark Cuban

TV--HDnet, possibly ppv or in addition to HDnet

I think Cox will get some type of co-promoter credit for "lending" Silvia to Affliction.

These are my guesses.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
probably one of the few times I'll be rooting for Big Timmeh. The amount of ramifications this fight presents is huge, esp if Tim wins.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
Agreed, I would rate this as one of the top mma fights in history, ramification wise. This could have a big effect on sharing of fighters, cross-promotion, the legal battle between randy and UFC, fedor's future and his place historically, randy's future, how the UFC's HW division really stacks up and so on. Of course a lot of that still will be opinion, but this could greatly effect those opinions.

Damn this excites me. I might have to make a trip to Texas!!

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
Good for Tim. Glad to see he is getting the fight that everyone else wants. Too bad he doesnt deserve to fight Fedor but I'm actually starting to like Tim for some reason. I was kind of pulling for him against Big Nog...well maybe not but I wasnt as happy as i usually am when Tim loses.
Is it my imagination or id Tim working on acquiring a personality?

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
I was wrong, and I'm happy about it!  Thank god we'll finally see a fight.  Here come the rumors Dana sent Tim to ruin Fedor.  I think Tim is probably Fedor's biggest threat of the available opponents right now.  This is no gimme fight.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
If it goes to the ground, it's over.  And Fedor has better takedowns than Nog.  Unless Silvia can KO Fedor in short order, I don't give him much of a shot.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
It's been a long time since we saw Fedor fight someone competent, and this may be in a drug tested situation in the US.  After the Shogun and Mirko experiences I think it's safe to say this isn't a garaunteed win for Fedor.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
well...... this IS in Texas, which had no drug tests after the Houston card the UFC did there..... not sure if anything has changed since then...

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
I'll buy the rusty from not facing top competition.  But Fedor has to worry about drug testing? LOL  Have you seen the guy?  You are aware Sylvia's tested positive for steroids twice right?

I don't normally root for Sylvia, but I hope he beats Fedor.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
This will be on PPV guaranteed and Fedor will win.

Those are my predictions.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
I will be really surprised if this is on PPV, the rest of the card would have to be amazing because Tim isn't known for being much of a draw these days and Fedor is a non-issue in North America.

My guess is it's on some HDNet fights card.

As for Fedor winning, he better win or you can bet his value in anything after that loss will be 1/3rd what it is now.  If he loses I can hear the "overrated" comments already.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
sing along now:
"Snap, crackle, pop! Timmy's arm breaking!"

Very interesting. I don't know who to root for, but I'm confident in Fedor's ability.
Problem is, Timmy seems able to make the greatest fighters look rubbish. I won't be having any action on this fight.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
I bet Fedor had to pay $20 for that pic.

I'm taking the Last Emperor by arm bar.

Best MMA Line Ever: Nogueira doesn't lose fights he just runs out of time.

Re: July 19th: Fedor vs. Sylvia
Should be very interesting to see how this does.  In a lot of ways this will be a barometer for the industry going forward.  Tim Sylvia is unpopular among UFC fans, but he is a name, and the fight will have some buzz.  My guess is it does around 40,000 buys, but if Cuban is really bankrolling it I guess he doesnt care if he loses a little.

How many homes in America have HDNet?  I have over 400 channels and I'm pretty sure I don't have HDNet.
