UFC 84 Preview: Tito Ortiz

People think I'm soft, their big mistake. Big big mistake and I hope Machida thinks I'm soft because I'm far from that.

I think my standup is a lot better than his and I'm going to take it for everything its worth.

Right now he's is in a bad place. He thinks he's going to stop me within a round. No one has ever stopped me in a round and no one will ever stop me in a round.

Machida doesn't hit hard enough... Your jiu jitsu skills get thrown out the window when you get punched in the face and elbowed in the face and your face is all open. And it's good.

-- Tito Ortiz looks to where he thinks he can beat Lyoto Machida at UFC 84. I highly doubt Tito will try to stand in this fight. I'm predicting takedowns a plenty.

... except when Guy Mezger choked you out in Round 1 of the UFC 13 tournament finals back in 1997 ... Not a stand-up stoppage, but a pretty convincing stop nonetheless.

Re: Quote of the Day
Unfortunately for Tito, Machida's takedown defense has gotten better and better, and even if he take it to the ground, Machida is incredibly hard to inflict damage against

Re: Quote of the Day
True, his takedown defense has improved but Tito is a really good watermark for how Machida will fare against the wrestlers in this weight class.

To me this is a really interesting fight for a number of reasons:
-what does Tito have left in the tank?
-can Machida stop a good wrestler from taking him down consistently?
-can Machida either sweep or nullify anything a good wrestler with half-decent BJJ can do while on top?

Basically if Machida can beat Tito convincingly, I think he'll have demonstrated that he's the man to beat at 205.

However I have my doubts about how effective his takedown defense will be against someone like Tito.  For all of his "I think my standup is a lot better than his" statements, I don't think Tito is going to do much other than set up his shots.  Tito will be doing everything he can to take Machida down (if he doesn't, he's an absolute moron), and I don't think Machida has seen that before (at least not from a wrestler at Tito's level, the only person who he's faced that might fit that mold is Vernon White).

Objective reality thinks differently than you, Tito.

Re: Quote of the Day
Poor, poor Tito. It's going to make him look so pathetic - first the Rashad fight where nobody looked good, then this. I don't know where he's going after this fiasco, but this certainly won't help his marketability.
