Travis Lutter Cut By UFC

From Pramit at Fight Ticker:

Travis Lutter has just e-mailed me to inform me that the UFC has released him from his contract. Lutter, the TUF 4 middlweight champ, had lost his last two fights with the promotion -- a second-round loss to Anderson Silva last year and a second-round loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 83.

I can't say I'm shocked.  He looked good early against both Silva and Franklin but considering he couldn't make weight for a life changing title shot and then in his next fight only had the cardio to go one round he pretty much made himself expendable.  I know the middleweight division is considered thin, but I think it is on the rise with some new contenders emerging and there isn't room for someone with a three minute gas tank.

Lutter could be an interesting pickup for EXC as he has some name recognition.  I'd look to bring him in for an immediate title shot just to bolster Lawler's (or Smith's) profile.  I wouldn't risk bringing him in and having him lose to someone lower on the food chain.  Bring him in, give him the title shot and go from there.  It isn't so far removed that you can't play up how close he was to finishing Silva.

Update [2008-4-28 13:17:55 by Brent Brookhouse]: I didn't notice that we'd put up a link over on the BloodyElbow lite sidebar prior to posting this. Feel free to go check out Travis' myspace posting for confirmation.

No offense to Pramit, but that's the douchiest way to start a paragraph I've ever seen. Especially when he probably just signed up to be notified of updates to the guy's MySpace page. How could it have been worse:

"So I was kicking it at Pure down in Vegas with these twins, trying to duck Lohan and the Hiltons who have been hounding me for the hook-up, and Travis Lutter just won't stop calling me! Finally I check my voice mail and he says he's been cut by the UFC. If I hadn't had a prior engagement to count my millions while nailing supermodels, I totally would have called him back."

I don't know Pramit real well, but he's scooped a lot of other sites on stuff in the past.  I have no problem with him reporting it that way.

Re: Travis Lutter Cut By UFC
Isn't there a pretty good chance that Lutter could beat a Lawler or a Smith?

Re: Travis Lutter Cut By UFC
Smith, yeah. i think lawler would win with the old sprawl and brawl gameplan he used against Ninja Rua.  He would use his decent wrestling and above average sprawl to draw the fight out into the 2nd and then start lettin loose stand-up on a gassed Lutter.

I think there is a chance he could win against either.  And that would be fine for them too.  I was simply saying that a win over him would help the champion's marketability.  But if Lutter were to win, good on him and EXC can say that they have a champion who gave Silva his toughest fight in the UFC.  It's still a loss....but whatever.

Re: Travis Lutter Cut By UFC
Fair enough.  I guess I just originally read what you wrote as suggesting that either Smith or Lawler would beat Lutter as a foregone conclusion.

That's some piss poor sentence structure, but I'm tired and I think it's close enough to making my point.
