Purge and Merge

The UFC will be cutting a lot of fighters in the upcoming months.  They have reached a point where they have so many fighters that even upper-mid level guys like Karo Parisyan fought only twice in 2007. Having that many guys, and only having them fight twice a year also makes it very hard to establish new stars, so Zuffa is going to start cutting guys that either lose a couple in a row or have boring fights.

Apparently they are planning on purging the 185 and 205 divisions from the WEC.  I suspect they will bring in a few guys from each division over to The UFC (Stann, Marshall, Filho, etc), and cut the rest off.  Brian Stann has tremendous marketable potential if he's able to train full time, there's no way they're going to let him go.

I almost wish they'd take the rest of the 205'ers in WEC and put them on TUF just so we could see some decent fights next season, but my guess is they'll just be cut.  It should be interesting to see who survives this purge.

Re: Purge and Merge
Instead of cutting all those fighters, perhaps they should have fights more often.

Re: Purge and Merge
That would cost more money.

I like this idea.  My first thought was to have a GP of some sort, but this is pretty much guaranteed NOT to happen in a Zuffa run organization.  So having them on TUF is somewhat akin to a GP (at least in tournament format).

Sadly, you're probably right that they'll just be cut.

Re: Purge and Merge
Are there even 16 205ers to put on the show?

Re: Purge and Merge
Probably not, but that doesn't mean that X number of former WEC fighters couldn't be featured on a season of TUF alongside other prospects.

Re: Purge and Merge
I really like the WEC > UFC via TUF idea.
TLA (three letter acronym).
