UFC On Demand Sucks

Here'sa a screenshot of one of the many error messages I've gotten while trying to watch fights on the uber-shitty UFC On Demand "service". Yes, I've naively been paying to see fights that I could get for free on the internets because I am a fan of the UFC and want to support the sport. But this is it. I've spent hours and hours on tech support since I subscribed and this latest error message which started happening about 50% of the time since the last fight night is just too much.

And keep in mind this is after spending literally 5 hours over four days online with tech support trying to get the stupid thing to work again after 2 months of being unable to access it and not having time to jack with it. That was also the time they tell me that they're no longer supporting Windows 2000 -- and the only reason I had kept my old Windows 2000 machine around was to watch their shitty service. So now after upgrading my OS to XP, it still doesn't work. I'm admittedly no computer genius, but I shouldn't have to be -- everybody else on the internet that wants to sell me something makes it easy for me to buy their shit, why is UFC different?

How do I hate UFC on Demand? Let me count the ways:

  1. No Macs. If you're on Apple, don't bother.
  2. No Firefox. Yup, dust off that virus-ridden copy of Internet Explorer if you want to watch these fights.
  3. Incomplete Archives. Yeah when I signed up I was under the impression that every UFC fight ever would be on there and maybe even most of the PRIDE fights. But no, they only post fights when they want to market an upcoming fight. So for example the GSP vs Matt Hughes fights were only added recently to build anticipation for UFC 83. And if its a fighter like Josh Barnett or Frank Shamrock you want to see, forget it they've been erased.
  4. Can't Keep the Files. Yeah, they're so worried about piracy that they don't let the people who actually pay for the fights keep a copy. Well not like it's hard to make a copy, but its not something my mom or any other law-abiding citizen could do.
  5. It Never Fucking Works. This is the one that I can't take anymore. The shit just doesn't work.

It'd be one thing if they were copyright nazis but made it easy for fans to buy their content online I'd be able to deal with it. But when I go through all these stupid hoops and still can't see the fights I fucking paid for....well, its bittorrent for me.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
It's funny really...you care about the UFC, but the UFC doesn't care about you.

Is that a suprise? They care about his dollars, though, so they should make nice.....but they won't.

I would really like to read this article, but the picture posted of the error message covers the first half of it. Call me a stickler, but I like to read the intro of an article.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
Nate, I feel ya. I just canceled mine day before yesterday, for exactly those reasons. I don't mind the $10 a month, if the shit worked. I think for $45 they should air the undercard fights as well, but hey, what do I know? If OnDemand had a true archive, and allowed downloads with non-draconian DRM, and aired the undercard fights nice and quickly, instead of a day or two later.....I'd be game. As it stands I was paying for the service, and then going to the internets and finding torrents so I could have a copy of the fights I really liked.

Speaking of, I just watched Maia/Herman, and that was gorgeous BJJ. I was so inspired by his performance that I found a BJJ instructor and am off to my first training session next week.

Bit of a side rant - could people, especially UFC commentators, please stop referring to people who refuse to tap as 'courageous'? There's no place for encouraging fighters to not tap. Tapping is not in any way non-courageous, or non-tough. It drives me nuts.

On that note, I totally agree. Dumb people will always find a way to insult smart people for making smart choices. I definitely can't wait for the day Kimbo gets caught in a RNC, and gets to either tap (it's for bitches, apparently) or nap. Hopefully by a really classy fighter, although there ain't many of those in EliteXC.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
I will NEVER tap to a choke in a fight.  In training yes, if it happens in the ring, no way.  I'm fighting tooth and nail until the sandman comes.  To an armbar, different story.

Oh, I'm 7-1 now having won this last weekend.  That's my last amatuer bout.  I'm looking at turning pro for one fight in July at a UCF card in Orlando.  Sam, my agent is looking for a 155er with a couple wins on him.  At 37 though, not many managers wanna risk their young studs on an old ass soldier like me, so we'll see what I get.  I'll keep ya'll posted.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
oh copy and paste...how I love thee....

Yeah, being a Mac user who's preferential to firefox, I'm screwed, but I don't mind, as bitTorrent continually saves the day. If I can't give my money to the UFC to see their content, I'll donate to my fav. tracker instead.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
Glad I'm not the only one getting those error messages.  Did you ever get a solution Nate?  It looks like it might be a codec thing.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
Unfortunately I won't have time to get tech support help again until this weekend.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
If the intelligent people who read this site can't figure it out, I wonder how well the UFC is doing with those hoople-heads that Luke experienced at the last Fight Night. For a lot of those people, condoms are emergent technology - imagine them working out codecs?!?

"Condoms are an emegent technology." LOL.

Seriously, this site has some of the smartest and most intelligent commentors of any MMA site that I know. Y'all are awesome.

I thought I was the only one having problems
I purchased the Maia-Herman fight just to enjoy the brutality of the beatdown. I have yet to see it because of their shitty On Demand service. I am now out $1.99 because of those bastards. I downloaded it and everything yet can't watch it. Pieces of crap. This makes me so angry. It's the only fight I wanted to see and I can't even watch it. Bastards.

Re: I thought I was the only one having problems
cough torrent cough

That fight was beautiful. Ed Herman isn't a walk-through, but Maia turned in a work of art on the ground. Watching him throw up beautiful submission attempts and then transition to another one so fluidly was inspirational. He made himself at least one new fan.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
First of all, let it be known that I'm a technological moron.  However, I just signed up for UFC On Demand last week - I use Firefox and have had no problems viewing any of the fights that I've downloaded.  Maybe make sure you have the newest version of Firefox and reinstall the UFC download manager?  Just a thought.

Another problem not listed - you have to re-sign in like every 5 minutes.  Total pain in the ass.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
cool, maybe that will help -- I've had it for six months and at that point they didn't allow firefox, apparently that changed and I never noticed. Maybe I'll give them one more shot. And yes, the constant re-signing in is uber lame.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
Hey Kid Nate, try this, as it has worked for me.

When you begin to download the fight.

Go to your windows explorer. Then click my documents. then my videos.

here you should see a UFC folder. Double click that. Now wait for the download on UFC OnDemand to be at least 10% completed. Then once it lets you press play, go back to the UFC folder and you should see the file your downloading there. Double click to play it from there.

Hopefully that works out for ya.

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
good lord.  That is some duct tape and shoe string shit there.

The UFC should be embarassed that they have people pay for that garbage (which is why I don't subscribe to UFC OnDemand)

Re: UFC On Demand Sucks
I told you guys a long time ago about how shitty buying PPVs were from them.  It worked a total of once for me.  Once.

Onto "another" subject, umm, anyone watch channelsurfing.net.  It's really cool, lots of, umm, sports on there.  Umm, live sports... like soccer...and umm...baseball...and um...MM... oooh forget it.  Dont listen to me.
