Who Are Fedor's Rivals?

According to Fedor's manager:

Question: Who would you say are Fedor's rivals?

Vadim Finkelstein: Randy Couture, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Josh Barnett, Andrei Arlovski are tough fighters. I heard Chuck Liddell called out Fedor. But there's too much of a weight difference. I believe Chuck challenged Fedor to hype himself to his fans.

Notice Tim Sylvia is nowhere on that list, although Finkelstein could very well be speaking off the top of his head. Still, though, with reports surfacing last year the Fedor had years ago turned down a fight with Sylvia for reasons that implied they didn't like the style match-up, it sure seems odd they are potentially taking the fight now and not listing him as a potential rival.

Given the nebulous nature of what "rival" could mean here, perhaps I'm being a little dramatic by noting the omission of Sylvia. Or perhaps Sylvia's recent decision-only wins have changed in his image in more minds than just fans of the sport.

Sure seems mountains outta molehils to me.

Doesn't seem to have any kind of deeper meaning to me...

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
Could be. But statements from folks like that are never accidental.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
I would consider Dana White "folks like this", and I am almost certain he has said accidental things in the past.

Just like Monte Cox said some accidental things when he was trying to make people believe things with Fedor were kosher.

If you're implying that he intentionally left Tim Sylvia out of the list...I just don't buy that at all.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
Right, because White is as thoughtful, careful and reserved as Fedor's management. Are you kidding? White is the exact opposite of anything approximating careful and measured speakers.

Then respond to the other two sentences, you know, the ones that aren't as easy to dismiss.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
No problem. I'm not sure if Cox or any other individual's euphemistic language is relevant here, but that's neither here nor there anyway. The point is I'm not directly implying Sylvia was omitted. I quite clearly state in the post Finkelstein could be speaking off the top of his head. I just think all things being equal, the chances of that are low. Finkelstein usually speaks quite directly and I'm simply postulating that it's interesting Sylvia isn't mentioned when a potential fight between the two is on the horizon.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
No mention of Mirko either. I would've thought Dream would be talking to them about having the rematch at NYE already.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
I was reading the english version of a croat site and they had a article quoting Finkelstein as saying that Mirko isn't ready for Fedor right now and that if they did fight Mirko would get hurt...... he said that Mirko needed to take 2 or 3 fights and regain his form before a Fedor vs Mirko 2  fight should be considered....

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
I realize I'm coming off like an asshole and that's not my intention. I just think it strange for Sylvia to be left off and I thought I caveated my language enough to leave room for "maybe nothing's going on here." Apologies to all if I'm a prick.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
The word going around right now is that Fedor and Tim are already going to fight.  If that is the case he could simply be naming other fighters.

I don't agree on the Chuck fight being too different in weight.  Doesn't Fedor only weight 230-240?  And didn't he fight Matt Lindland last year?

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
Beat me to it.  Lindland fights at 185 and Fedor fought him.  Chuck cuts to 205.  I don't see how that makes sense.  Not to mention how is it a good deal to fight Hong Man Choi but not Chuck?  Sounds to me like it's just a matchup they don't want.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
I like the comment that Chuck was trying to hype himself by talking about a fight with someone the casual MMA fan, who can name fighters from TUF or Chuck himself, have never heard of.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
Fedor fights between 225 and 240 and doesn't cut anything. Chuck cuts from 225 or so, and is 2 inches taller than Fedor. It could be argued that Chuck is actually bigger than Fedor.

Plus, Chuck's stand-up is better and he's just so damned hard to take to the ground - that's a bad match-up for Fedor (and I'm certainly no Chuck fan!).

But I'd love to see that fight happen. Two of the baddest men on the planet: one looks like a cross between an old man and a baby with a mohawk, and the other looks like the guy whose only job at McDonald's is to sweep the parking lot. Beautiful.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
I gotta agree Sylvia's name being absent strikes me as odd, as does Arlovskis name being present.

Re: Who Are Fedor's Rivals?
Except Fedor and Chuck are the same size (Chuck is probably "bigger" overall since he's significantly taller)...Chuck cuts and Fedor doesn't...

Fedor is basically a UFC LHW that has dominated at HW for years...
