Tito Ortiz Has No Poker Face
Over at the UnderGround, UFC lightweight contender Tito Ortiz actually started a thread titled "EliteXC Makes A Name For Itself". Well, actually the thread had a ton of typos and poorly written English, so I've cleaned it up a little. In any event, Tito's first post inside the thread was a copy of Jake Rossen's article on EliteXC hitting the CBS airwaves with the message: "Finally Dana is shown for who he really is!!" (again, I cleaned up the language for readability).
Without working ourselves into a lather over what could happen, it is safe to assume EliteXC would have to be an extremely enticing alternative for Ortiz, provided they could afford him. With a lack of recognizable stars and the opportunity of a lifetime in reaching a massive network audience, Ortiz could be just the prospect to legitimize the EliteXC product at a pivotal moment for the fledgling organization. More importantly, the CBS-EliteXC arrangement offers Ortiz a second shot at career and athletic glory. He'd not only be the organization's biggest and most marketable star, he'd likely be a top contender for anyone on their roster at 205lbs. And let's also not forget about the potential rematch with Frank Shamrock should EliteXC and Strikeforice work together (and they likely would). Ortiz could become champion again and while the idea of his legitimacy as a champion may clash with what the hardcore fans understand about the 205lbs. rankings, Ortiz could be the flag bearer for the casual fans looking to see what all the fuss is about when EliteXC hits CBS later this year.
All of a sudden, maybe Ortiz doesn't need the UFC afterall.

Re: Tito Ortiz Has No Poker Face
They have no 205lbs. roster.
Though, Tito has already thrown the challenge out to Kimbo (in the E:60 Kimbo piece), which would absolutely do business.
Realistically, is their a great threat to Tito Ortiz in EXC's heavyweight division? Antonio Silva I'll grant you, but if you put together Slice v. Ortiz, you probably don't immediately rebound with Ortiz v. Silva, anyhow. I do believe that there is a resonable doubt as to who wins a match between Otiz and Silva, though.

As for their 205lbs. "roster", no, it doesn't really exist. But it's hard to imagine they'd make a star as big as Ortiz change weightclasses. Presumably they'd rake talent in from somewhere to position Ortiz as a big time player in MMA, EliteXC and the light heavyweight class. Ortiz is expensive to begin with and making him change weightclasses is likely going to cost EliteXC even more. I just don't see that happening for his first fight should he sign with them.

Re: Tito Ortiz Has No Poker Face
Yes, a fight with Frank Shamrock makes a lot of sense as well. It makes the most sense to do this fight before Ortiz v. Kimbo, not only because it would allow Ortiz to stay at 205lbs., but as much as I'm sure they'd love to put the match together, I don't think Gary Shaw and co. are that eager to have Kimbo lose.
Beyond those matches, however, I'm not sure what else EXC does with Ortiz. Sure, they can bring in warm bodies at 205lbs. if they just want to take the Tito Ortiz show on the road, but Ortiz draws best when he's able to build up his grudge matches. Is anyone going to take Tito Ortiz v. just a guy seriously? It seems to me there aren't very many 205lbs. fighters available outside of UFC these days. Little Nog? Arona? Randleman? Some folks in Cage Rage that no one cares about? File them under "options," anyhow.
Anyone else? I'm at a loss.

Re: Tito Ortiz Has No Poker Face
It's a gamble either way. I think of the match as an "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" situation. How many times have we seen UFC try to set-up a dream match only to have one or both of the fighters involved lose/get injured/retire from the company in the meantime?
It may not be ideal, but you can certainly argue that it's the best way to go at this point.

Re: Tito Ortiz Has No Poker Face
I think Tito wants to be a celebrity as much as a fighter these days (and there is nothing wrong with that) and this would fit the bill.

This may all just be posturing for a better UFC deal. I guess we'll find out.
