Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman in August

Mark Coleman and Joe Rogan announced it between fights at UFC 82. Great matchup. Lesnar has an excellent chance to win since he's got the same skill set as Coleman, but is younger, bigger, stronger, and quicker. Coleman meanwhile brings a great resume -- "former UFC heavyweight champ" -- and certainly deserves the big payday. MUCH better than the rumored Justin McCully/Lesnar matchup. Good job Dana and Joe Silva.

Re: Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman in August
This picture makes me want to see Coleman get a good payday but it also lets you know the physical and personal toll the fights take on Coleman. I remember the mid to late 90s wehn Coleman would take unbelievable amounts of punishment and keep getting back up but just sort of standing there taking more and more shots. Seeing what is obviously his daughter's in this photo is sad. I can't imagine what it must be like to watch your dad win or lose end up looking like he just survived a trainwreck. The look in their eye's says it all

Perfect fight for Lesnar. And I, too, am happy that Mark will get a payday. Plus, it's not like he has NO shot. What if he won?

Randy Couture redux.

Sorry I´m just afraid those old guys get some brain damage or some.
Is it so bad to retire?

Re: Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman in August
This is very true. The science is merciless about the fact that fighters over 35 are at greatly increased chance of brain damage from head shots. At the same time, it's up to the fighters and Coleman has certainly never shown excessive concern for his own safety.

Re: Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman in August
So they're putting an old guy in with an untested and relatively unskilled fighter... Kimbo vs. Tank 2? Is that really the fight everybody wants to see?

Also, who do you think has the steroid advantage? Coleman because of the extra 10 years of injections or Lesnar because he has had access to the more expensive high tech roids? Jeez, with two HIGHLY skilled steroid enthusiasts, I don't know who to root against!

Blech.

There are plenty of people that'd be willing to place a wager on that one.

Re: Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman in August
So something positive can come out of this.

The only gratifying thing for me about Lesnar's ridiculous levels of steroid abuse is that he's too heavy to get chased out of the HW division: another couple losses and I won't have to see him in the UFC ever again. All I have to do is avoid the second rate promotions like Dreams (he's tailor-made for the kind of freak shows the Japanese seem to love so much) or K-1 Dynamite!.

Without knees to the head, I'm not sure Coleman can pull this one off.  Sad this fight maybe a beatdown on Coleman.

Re: Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman in August
Coleman has very little chance of stuffing a Lesnar takedown. Lesnar is younger, stronger, much quicker and a more highly decorated wrestler. This fight could well be a repeat of Coleman vs Severn, except with Coleman playing the Severn role.

Re: Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman in August
I kinda question the "more highly decorated" statement. Are you including his professional wrestling or something? From Coleman's wikipedia entry:

"...he was a two time Mid-American Conference wrestling champion. In his senior year, he ... won an NCAA championship. Out of college, Coleman was awarded a spot on the US Wrestling team, and took 7th place in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain."

Brock's:

"Lesnar finished his amateur career as a two-time NJCAA All-American, two-time NCAA All-American, two-time Big Ten Champion, and the 2000 NCAA heavyweight champion..."

They don't straight up compare, but being the Olympic team seems to be a bigger deal to most people. I'd say that Coleman has the better wrestling pedigree, but, as I keep pointing out, wrestling isn't MMA.

Brock is a couple inches taller, 40 pounds heavier, and 13 years younger. Luckily for Coleman, Brock doesn't seem to have any skills that will help him finish a fight in MMA except takedowns and some amateurish striking on the ground.

Actually, I want to ammend my previous statement: it's Kimbo vs. Tank 2 but less exciting, except to fans of pro wrestling and pharmaceutical makers.
