3 IFL Titles on the Line Feb. 29

The IFL just sent out a press release to announce the following:

Below is today's news that Matt Horwich, Roy Nelson and Ryan Schultz will be the first IFL athletes to defend their titles, at the league's opening event at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Friday, February 29.

Title bouts include:

Matt Horwich vs. Tim Kennedy, 185 lbs.
Roy Nelson vs. Fabiano Scherner, 265 lbs.
Ryan Schultz vs. John Gunderson, 155 lbs.

...

The Las Vegas event also marks the debut of two new IFL squads, Team Xtreme Couture and Mario Sperry's MMA Top Team.

I'm glad to see that the IFL isn't wasting time having people defend titles.  Titles help to create the "big fight atmosphere" that is usually missing from IFL shows.

Here is how the car dlooks according to Sam Caplan at proelite.com:

- Matt Horwich vs. Tim Kennedy for the IFL middleweight title

Team Quest vs. the Lion's Den (fighters listed in order of teams they represent):

  • Ryan Schultz vs. John Gunderson for the IFL lightweight title
  • Fabiano Scherner vs. Roy Nelson for the IFL heavyweight title
  • TBD vs. Pat Healy
Team Xtreme Couture vs. MMA Top Team:
  • Benji Radach vs. TBD
  • TBD vs. Marcello Salazar
  • TBD vs. TBD
Preliminary Bout:

- Ian Loveland vs. Dennis Davis in a featherweight bout

I'm kinda disappointed that the belts are not being contested outside of the team format....the top contender won't be fighting for the belt, just the best guy from the team you are scheduled to face.  Is Scherner really deserving of a shot at Big Roy?

The following card is looking like this

April 4th - IFL - Izod Arena, East Rutherford

Two of the following three defending their belts:
Wagney Fabiano
Jay Hieron
Vlad Matyushenko

Bart Palaszewski vs Deividas Taurosevicius
Basically a #1 contender's match, winner will probably get a title shot.  This may also mean that the Red Bear Chicago team would be facing Renzo Gracies team.

Re: 3 IFL Titles on the Line Feb. 29
regarding the April 4th card,   Matyushenko has moved to the Chicago based team, so he would face either Jamal Patterson or Andre Gusmao from Renzo's team.....either of which would be a deserving opponent.

Mark Miller would most likely face Delson Heleno of Team Gracie if Heleno is healthy enough after his injury in the GP Finals.
