This is why the clock is ticking on Zuffa's monopoly on MMA -- they build up stars like Randy and Tito who break into the mainstream and then leave the organization.
That mainstream coverage can drive a fight. Especially if the sports press decides they don't like Dana or Zuffa and start pushing the "does UFC really have the toughest fighters?" angle.
Remember Fedor getting coverage in Esquire last year. He'll be getting more coverage, the guy is a story.

yes i agree. UFC is not playing their cards very well right now. I hope that people start to realize that Dana is one of the biggest problems in the UFC. If he's gone, alot of fighter come to the UFC.
He's just a douchbag with a huge ego.

I'll follow Randy to any organization he goes to.
Screw the UFC

I'm going to step back a moment and not comment on the politics of it and who's got an ego or what the UFC is doing wrong because, simply, I don't care. All I care about it when is goddamn Fedor vs Randy going to happen. When can I get a couple buddies and a whole mess of beers and watch Fedor battle Randy inside of a fucking cage on goddamn pay-per-view? That's all I ask.

I just think you're overstating it Nate.  This thing, if it goes down in October and M1 has no regular TV deal, likely does 50,000 buys and never gets talked about besides one night.

To break the monopoly a company needs a real tv deal.

I probably am overstating it -- but look where we are now -- Randy's left the UFC and he's on ESPN2 talking.
Just remember a few years ago -- think of all the champs who left the UFC in title disputes -- Tito, Randy at least twice, Barnett, Frye, Royce ,etc.
They just vanished. None of them got mainstream media attention to vent. None of them required a massive barrage of lawsuits.
Fast-forward to 2010, let's say BJ Penn sweeps the 155 division, moves up and beats GSP in the biggest PPV in MMA history. Then BJ being BJ he wants to fight Aoki or Gomi or JZ in Japan for HDNet but he's got the belt -- think they'll be able to sue him into oblivion too?
Did anyone else notice Mark Cuban citing the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform act in a recent interview?
Dana and the Fertittas are trying to hold the cork in the bottle but the pressure is building and building. Ironically the bigger they make the UFC and the more media attention they get the harder it will be to keep it all as their own private fiefdom.
Swift is right about this Michael, in the long term at least.
