The first thing to jump out at me when looking at the Middleweight Meta-Rankings is how weak the UFC is in this division. Leland Rolling can say what he wants about the UFC welterweight division needing a talent infusion, but as we saw yesterday the UFC has a pretty deep lock on the top tier talent at 170lbs with 7 of the top 10 in the world in their stable. GSP might be head and shoulders over everyone but outside of Jake Shields you can't really say there are fighters in other promotions that he needs to face to prove he's #1 in the world.

Middleweight is a different story. Anderson Silva's amazing run in the UFC has clearly established him as the consensus #1 in the weight class. Anderson scores a perfect 30 points in the Meta-Rankings which means that EVERY outlet ranking fighters has him at #1. But when Paulo Filho, the consensus #2 fighter is in the Zuffa owned WEC, #3 Matt Lindland is unsigned by any organization, #5 Robbie Lawler just re-signed with EliteXC and so on...You're looking at a situation where the UFC champ has a pretty thin claim to be facing the best in the world.

Thank God for Dan Henderson agreeing to move down to 185 and face Silva. That fight promises to be epic and many pundits believe Henderson will take Silva's belt away. Which sets up a lucrative and intriguing rematch plus the possibility that Filho would move to the UFC to face Henderson for the belt.

The only recent movement in the rankings came from the NYE events in Japan where the erratic Kazou Misaki salvaged his top 10 status by KTFO the controversial Yoshihiro Akiyama with a soccer kick of dubious legality. Akiyama was poised to shoot up the rankings had he won, having demolished Denis Kang only a couple months earlier. The prospect of a rematch in Korea has had the Asian MMA world buzzing. But Misaki's recent signing to World Victory Road might gum up the works.

Trigg and Miller are on a collision course for a rematch at HDNet Fights. Jorge Santiago is riding (relatively) high after taking the Strikeforce middleweight tourny with wins over Trevor Prangley and Sean Salmon.

Rich Franklin, Nathan Marquardt and Yoshin Okami constitute the legit contenders in the UFC 185 division who have already shown they can't beat Anerson Silva niche.

The methodology of the rankings is in the full entry.

Star-divide

Rankings are based on an average of 6 Media Rankings (MMA Weekly, Sherdog, Irish Whip, MMA on Tap, our own Luke Thomas', and 5 oz of Pain), Fan Rankings (represented by MMA HQ Rankings) and Computer Rankings (represented by Fight Matrix). If we missed a good ranking someone is doing let us know, we'll add them to the mix. Particularly other computerized or fan vote rankings.

A #1 vote is worth 10 points, #2 is 9 points and so on. Media rankings are totaled and divided by 6 to represent the average media ranking, this is then added to the computer and fan ranking points to create the total (perfect score is 30 points).

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
Yeah it's far and away their weakest division. Far and away. The lightweight division is kind of misleading because although the UFC only has 6 of the top 16 fighters in the meta-rankings it's pretty obvious that a bunch of their fighters -- tyson griffin, edgar, tavares, huerta, guida -- could go to japan and regulate against ranked competition. That's totally not the case at 185. There's a huge drop off from Silva and Henderson to the Franklin, Marquardt, Okami level and then another massive drop off to the McDonald, Doerksen, Tanner, Herman, Leben, Martin level. I think Lawler, Trigg, Akiyama, and maybe Kang and Misaki would cut through the all but the best UFC fighters no problem.

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
Not to mention Lindland who could definitely hang with anyone at that level.

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
looking at this really makes you wonder how Zuffa let Miller go...and how they came close to letting Okami go as well.

I don't care if Dana thinks that Hendo is better than Lindland as he has been saying a lot recently...you can't say that there's any reason to not bring on Lindland other than "personal differences."

Another Note...as mentioned in the Light Heavy rankings Hendo would rank several points higher had all rankings put him in the same division.  Rather than a few in LHW and a few in MW.

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
No doubt and made no effort to sign Trigg or Lawler or Kang.
I think there was a point when they could've gotten Misaki -- he trains w/ Ryo Chonan and Akihiro Gono I believe.
Just negligence of the division on their part. Makes no sense to me.

Do any of the Japanese middleweights speak English?

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
I presume Trigg has his hands in several other companies, which is the antecedent of what Zuffa wants in a fighter.
And if I remember correctly Kang has Korean sponsorships that were able to trump all domestic contracts.
I still agree with Lawler and Miller, though.  Or at least I'm unaware of reasons why they weren't brought over.  I know Miller hated the exclusivity offered by the WEC, but still.

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
Woah, this is just wrong.  I don't know where I saw it, but EliteXC outbid UFC for Lawler.  And I DO know that Kang said that the UFC made a bid for him that he liked, and then K-1 came and TRIPLED it.

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
good info, I'll look around and see what I can find. I remember Dana saying disparaging things about Lawler but that would be typical Dana to trash someone he wanted but couldn't sign.

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
Didn't Dana have an issue of Kang not being popular enough to offer him big money and thats why he didn't sign him. I remember reading it somewhere. I'll try and find a link.

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
How many of these are natural MWs versus cut MWs?  I only ask because Lawler, Trigg and Mayhem cut to WW when fighting in the UFC.  I'm curious how people make sense of it all.  How much do people/site's rankings reflect competition in that weight class against others who cut to get there?

Re: Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Middleweight
I like to think that people rank the fighters based on their performance at that weight. Weight cutting shouldn't be factored in -- if the fighter makes weight at 185, he makes weight at 185.
