What Is Gina Carano Doing?

Cage Potato assesses the situation:

I'm sure part of the reason Carano took the Gladiators role, besides the money, was to promote herself as viable television talent; if not acting roles, Carano could surely score hosting gigs post-AG for shows in the vein of Fear Factor or Wild On. The problem is, in all the press and promo clips we've seen for the show, Carano's name is rarely mentioned. Instead she's just "Crush," a Gladiator, a Warrior; she's occasionally identified as some sort of pro fighter, though her legitimate MMA pedigree is never discussed. Any hopes that her presence on the show would be a good thing for MMA should by now be deflated.

So when I see this clip of her on The Today Show this morning, standing next to a ridiculous man-beast named "Wolf," half-naked in 40-degree weather, being swatted with a pugel stick by Ann Curry, getting chastised by Matt Lauer for getting too rough with another NBC fluff-piece reporter, and having to deal with Meredith Viera's minstrel dress-up antics (the housewives love that shit), I just hope that they're paying her enough to deal with this humiliation. And I hope that diehard "Beautiful Disaster" fans take her back when the guy with the flashy car and pickup line moves on to the next pretty face...

I'll be honest: the analogy Carano "gave it up" (that phrase is used earlier in the entry) to said interests smacks of misogyny by articualating the course of Carano's career through a prism of sexual conquest. That being said, the point is - I think - ultimately correct: where is the promotion of her MMA career vis a vis American Gladiators? It's still early in the game, so perhaps we are all speaking too soon, but one has to wonder how serious a MMA competitor Carano is with distractions like this that affect her ability to fight at a lower weight and take away the time necessary to develop and test her MMA skills.

Re: What Is Gina Carano Doing?
The point of the gladiators isn't to be "real people."  They're supposed to (cheesy or not) JUST be gladiators.

You've got a Mr. Universe never being mentioned as such (Titan = Mike O'Hearn), Cirque du Soleil participant (Militia), Brother of "The Rock" Duane Johnson (Toa), and a bunch of female body builders.

But the show isn't supposed to be about them or their stories.  It's about the contestants facing off against "personalities" not against "people."  So if anyone is holding out hope for the episode where they go on and on about Gina's credentials as a fighter you can keep on waiting.

Personally if she is happy doing what she is doing...then I figure I have no right to complain.  Obviously MMA isn't the same level of a priority for her as a lot of us wish it was...but it's her life not ours.

Re: What Is Gina Carano Doing?
AG and MMA are separate things she is pursuing, I fail to see how one has anything to do with the other.

Any article that starts off with "I'm sure part of the reason" is gossip and hearsay and a waste of time to read.

It is too bad that her pursuing a second career is met with such a scathing review of some grand scheme she has to become some kind of TV personality instead of just being an athlete accomplishing multiple goals.

When you're scheduled to compete on a Feb. 16 card and you suddenly drop off and the folks involved with the fight promotion that have been promoting you come out publicly and say they are not happy with the "side work" then they have EVERYTHING to do with one another.

American Gladiators is just a cushy job for Gina.  And she never has to make weight so it's a perfect situation for her.

"...where is the promotion of her MMA career vis a vis American Gladiators"

It doesn't have to be instantaneous.  If and when she returns to fighting she will not only have her looks and talent to sell the show and increase her paycheck, but her bargaining power will be inflated by the ability to use her status as a Gladiator.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if part of her contract includes the usage of AG imagery for her fighting career.

I agree it's still very early in the game, I just wonder if she's making a lot of mistakes up front in terms of keeping business relationships with ProElite healthy.

Re: What Is Gina Carano Doing?
Gina Carano is doing the right thing. It's been said  many times it's not always the best fighters that become the biggest megastars. While one can argue whether or not Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, or Tito Ortiz were ever legitimately the best fighters in the world there's no doubt they are the three biggest superstars we've seen. A UFC event will garner hundreds of thousands of more buys with the attachment of any of those names. Does this mean that Randy, Tito, or Chuck aren't amazing fighters? No. But to be a superstar you have to have a combination of looks, charisma, talent, and most importantly, the correct promotion. (Promotion in the sense of how you're promoted, not the actual promotion you're working for)

Gina Carano is doing what's best for herself financially. No matter what the industry, "die-hard" fans always criticizes different athletes and entertainers for "selling out". If selling out means finding a way to make more money doing what you love to do and taking advantage of it then those who don't "sell out" are simply stupid. Not everyone has the opportunity but there are a select few who do.

Gina was handpicked by Elite XC to be the face of women's MMA due to her good looks and the fact that she can actually fight. Throw in her really sexy voice and you've got something you can guarantee returns on when you bring it to market. All she had to do was go out there and win and she held up her part of the bargain in rather exciting fashion. Now she's given a shot to be on network television every week on a show with a similar demographic as most MMA and she's being criticized? This show is only on for a few months and everyone who's saying that she is not "committed" isn't with her all the time to make that assumption and neither am I to say otherwise; we simply don't know. But if I were a betting man I don't think American Gladiators is a M-F 9-5 job. Maybe I'm wrong, it's just my hypothesis. I'd like to think that she has to be around for the once a week taping of the episode and maybe a few outside promotions. The girls earning money on the side and at the same time getting her face on network TV which will only garner her more fans and in turn attract more fans to MMA.

She builds herself up with two big wins in EXC, takes a few months off from MMA competition to be an American Gladiator, and comes back fighting again. Her star will be much bigger when she returns so even if she were to lose that will automatically turn her opponent into a star, thus creating two legitimate female stars in mixed martial arts. And don't say "But Tara LaRosa is already a star"; she may be potentially the best women's fighter out there but until she does some damage on a national stage (not BoDog) she's just like Jon Fitch was.
