The Knockout of Cub Swanson

Call me foolish or accuse me of romanticizing the past, but does anyone else get the sense - beyond the problems the style match-up plays - that Cub Swanson is cruising for a bruising in his fight tomorrow with Jens Pulver? While he hasn't quite written off Pulver, he certainly believes this fight is his opportunity to usher in the retirement of a fighter well beyond his best days. Notable quote:

"He has one powerful part of his game," says Swanson. Pulver greatly improved his striking in 2004, winning four boxing matches (three by stoppage). In Swanson's view, his ground game leaves enough to be desired. "I feel like Jens's lack of ground is going to hurt him because I can take the fight anywhere I want," he says. "I feel like I match up against him well."

Although he's been in the ring since 2004, Swanson (10-1) still puts a lot of stock in the pre-fight head games. "I love that I feel like when I'm on top of someone punching him in the face, it's gonna get stopped easier than it is with a submission," he says. But Pulver (21-8-1) has been around the bend since the `90s.

...

"You can still get in people's heads," says Swanson.

I seriously doubt 23-year old Swanson can get in Pulver's head. Perhaps the nerves stemming from fear that dropping a third consecutive loss would do irreperable damage to his career is affecting Pulver himself, but I seriously doubt anything Swanson does or says rattles Pulver. We all saw the video of Pulver taking offense to the insinuation by Swanson that their fight was delayed because Pulver's injury wasn't serious enough. While that may have angered Pulver, Lil' Evil is too much of a veteran to then turn that anger into recklessness inside the cage.

And there's the style match-up. Swanson does have better BJJ, this much is true. The question, though, is does that matter? Pulver has only been submitted once since 2000 and that was by B.J. Penn. His submission defense is good and his experience gives him confidence to spot the antecedent moves that lead to finishing submissions.

Pulver's takedown defense is serviceable and will likely be better here than we've seen in recent performances. Remember, Pulver was a wrestler before he was a striker. The smaller cage will make the atmosphere more wrestling friendly, but it will also make Swanson - an aggressive fighter - a tad more reckless. That, I think, will be his undoing. Swanson's wrestling isn't that great, which means meaningful portions of this fight will take place on the feet - a location where Pulver has a distinct advantage. What's worse? Swanson has publicly stated he plans to at least engage with Pulver on the feet in the early going. Notable quote:

I definitely feel like there's no way I can just go in there and shoot on him, you know? So, I'm definitely working on the boxing, and I'm going to bang with him. If the opportunity comes where I get him down and pound him out, that's great. But until I feel like I'm losing the exchanges, I'm going to bang with him. I feel like I'll gain more respect if I go toe to toe, and I prove that I'm dangerous wherever I'm at.

Pulver's more technical boxing combined with vicious KO power and decent takedown defense should seal the deal for the former UFC Lightweight champion. Swanson has a lot of the right tools to become a champion at a later date, but he matches up better with fellow jiu-jitsu fighters. Pulver's style is tweaked just far enough outside of the MMA jiu-jitsu game to give Swanson lots of trouble.

Pulver, by KO, 2nd round.

Re: The Knockout of Cub Swanson
Can you remember another guy who had the same famous last words? Alessio Sakara. He said he would bang with Alexander, even though it was stated that he was working on some takedown and GnP techniques.

Re: The Knockout of Cub Swanson
How about the loser has to put an ad of the winner's site on their site for 2 weeks?

Re: The Knockout of Cub Swanson
Sounds like a plan to me. So where is my ad going to go? I will give you a choice of either a 468*60 at the top ( rotating )or the whole 600*120 at the side.

Lets get it on!

Re: The Knockout of Cub Swanson
The only place I could put it would be on the upper left hand corner of the page for now. Do you have a vertical banner?
