This Week In MMA: November 18-24, 2007

It's a relatively slow week in the world of MMA. With no major fight cards, we'll turn our attention to some of the regional action, including a fifth year anniversary show for Japanese promoter ZST. There isn't much to get me excited but thankfully next week will feature a couple of high profile events.

This Week's Schedule

  • Nov 21: KOTC: Bad Boys in MT. Pleasant, Michigan
  • Nov 21: MCC 11: Night of Champions in Urbandale, Iowa
  • Nov 23: ZST 15: Fifth Anniversary in Tokyo, Japan
  • Nov 23: MFC 14: High Rollers in Edmonton, Alberta
  • Nov 24: bodogFIGHT presents: Hook N Shoot in Evansville, Indiana
  • Nov 24: FX3 Fight Night 6: England vs. Germany in Reading, England
  • Nov 24: COF 10: November Pain in Tijuana, Mexico
  • Nov 24: EFC 22 in Columbus, Ohio
  • Nov 24: Legacy Fighting Championships in Calgary, Alberta
  • Nov 24: Ring Xtreme Challenge 2 in Victoriaville, Quebec
  • Nov 24: Art of War Fighting Championship 9: Fists of Fury in Beijing, China

since none of the cards by themselves deliver a world class fighting extravaganza, I'll focus on the main events and known fighters for the most part, in lieu of breaking down the full fight cards.

Star-divide

KOTC: Bad Boys in MT. Pleasant, Michigan (Soaring Eagle Casino) Nov 21, 2007

King of the Cage is notorious for not releasing fight card information prior to their events. Probably due to the fact that quality matchmaking is not the company's strong suit. I have however discovered that there are a couple bouts of interest on the card.

  • Jason Ireland (17-7-1) vs. Clay French (14-2-0)
  • Dan Severn (79-15-7) vs. Don Richard (7-8-1)
  • James Lee (12-2-0) vs. Hank Barela (?-?-?)

MCC 11: Night of Champions in Urbandale, Iowa (KGGO/Bucs Arena) Nov 21, 2007

  • Cole Jennet (2-1-0) vs. Mike Van Meer (20-19-0) MW Title
  • Mike Glenn (2-0-0) vs. Chuck Grigsby (12-3-0) LHW Title
  • Matt Delanoit (4-3-0) vs. Bobby Voelker (11-3-0) WW Title

This Midwest Cage Championship card also features a 4-man, one night, lightweight tournament.

ZST 15: Fifth Anniversary in Tokyo, Japan (Differ Ariake) Nov 23, 2007

The Fight Network writes about Hideo Tokoro's return to ZST

Hideo Tokoro will meet Wataru Inatsu at ZST 15 on Friday, Nov. 23 at Differ Ariake in Tokyo. The card will feature 12 MMA bouts and two grappling matches.

Tokoro (18-12-1), looking to bounce back from a first-round TKO loss to Kultar Gill at K-1 HERO’S "Middleweight Tournament Opening Round" in July, may be best known for his battles with the Gracie family; he fought UFC Hall-of-Famer Royce Gracie to a draw in 2005 and defeated Royler Gracie by unanimous decision last December.
Tokoro’s bout with Inatsu (1-2-1) clouds his availability for K-1 "Premium 2007 Dynamite!!" on Monday, Dec. 31. Fight Entertainment Group president Sadaharu Tanigawa recently mentioned Tokoro as one of the fighters he had planned to bring to the New Year’s Eve show.

"If Tokoro loses on the 23rd, that will be his final match of the year," ZST executive Joe Uehara said. Tokoro agreed. "I also want to fight New Year’s Eve, so I am thinking about this," he said. "I have to look at Inatsu, and I can’t think about what comes after that."

In addition, the ZST Genesis Tournament will continue at the Nov. 23 show. The semi-finals and final of the welterweight division will be contested, along with the quarter-finals of the lightweight division.

This event also marks the return of Naoyuki Kotani to ZST after an unsuccessful stint in the UFC.

MMA:

  • Hideo Tokoro (18-12-1) vs. Wataru Inatsu (1-2-1)

bodogFIGHT presents: HooknShoot in Evansville, Indiana (Evansville Coliseum) Nov 24, 2007

The big news coming out of the HooknShoot organization is that the anticipated rematch between Nick Thompson and Eddie Alvarez is off due to Thompson being unable to cut the weight. The event is supposed to feature an 8-woman tournament as well as featuring several fighters under bodogFIGHT contract.

Ring Xtreme Challenge 2 in Victoriaville, Quebec (Pavillon Agri-Sports) Nov 24, 2007

RXC is a show co-promoted by veteran Canadian fighters Steve Claveau and David Loiseau. Jonathan "The Road Warrior" Goulet (19-9-0) vs. Dan "Torture" Chambers (11-4-0) headlines the card in what should be a solid fight. Goulet needs a win following his UFC Fight Night 11 bout where he suffered a submission loss to rising star Dustin Hazelett. Training out of the Canadian Martial Arts Centre in Alberta, Canada, Dan "Torture" Chambers will be looking to earn his third straight win.

good round up. I'm glad to see Naoyuki Kotani is getting back into action -- he had a better run in UFC  than meets the eye -- had he not fouled Drew Fickett i think he could've won that fight. He mainly needed to cut weight down to 155.

Rising star Dustin Hazelett?

Hazlett has 3 straight UFC victories, although I admit "rising star" maybe a little strong.

Re: This Week In MMA: November 18-24, 2007
He's a good fighter but racking up the undercard wins doesn't really make you a rising star. Look at Jon Fitch. He had to get 5 straight to get on a Fight Night broadcast.

I don't believe so man.  I gave a look around and didn't see anything.  If any of us stumble across anything we'll post it up.
