Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Houston Alexander on ESPN

Alexander says he's "an employee of the UFC fans" and therefore if they want to see a knockout, he is obligated to deliver one. The problem is that while I'm sure a KO is in his game plan, such single-minded game plans are recipes for disaster. Alexander may wind up blasting Silva, too, but the more I learn about Alexander the more I realize he's still rough around the professional edges.

Q: One of the questions most people have had about your style is what is your ground game like?

HA: A lot of people have asked me that. I have two words for anyone asking - Bob Shermer. Shermer has one of the top Jiu-Jitsu teams in the world, and I just happen to be working with him. I also have one of the best wrestling coaches in the Midwest in Curly Alexander. He has been a wrestling coach for 35 years. My ground game is great. It is just as good as anyone's in the UFC. It probably rates a little better then my stand-up. If these guys can get past my first line of defense, they'll get a chance to see it.

- I'm thinking we'll be seeing his ground game this weekend.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
Luke,

What exactly do you expect him to say?  Every fighter with a tendency to stand up says he wants to go in there and get a KO.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
I expect him to say he's not going to blindly follow what the fans "ask" him to do. The fans would likely ask that of every fighter, so they aren't exactly the best source.

I expect him to say he's committed to winning no matter how he has to do it. I expect him to say he's not going to stand and trade if it's not going his way.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
I think he is just trying to be a "man of the fans."  I would seriously hope he isn't so single minded in his planning.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
I guess I don't put as much stock into interviews as other people.  Just because the guys says, "I want a KO for the fans, yo," doesn't mean that he's going to walk into that fight solely focused on it.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
This guy loses once he hits the canvas.

And someone tell alexander the sport is called mma. He wants fans? He should cease being a dumb, pandering jerk-off.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
I think he's just trying to be a populist "man of the people."

Im kind of surpirsed how critical people are of him in general, maybe it's just a backlash to guys being overhyped too fast, but it seems like on lots of other message boards, people just can't get enough of saying how overrated he is.  To me, all I've seen is a guy that's had 2 highlight reel knockouts, one against a guy Chuck couldn't do shit to.  That's gotta be worth something.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
He's only overrated in that people are saying he's great before we actually know if he's great. We know he has KO power and a good clinch; we don't know much else.

Re: Houston Alexander on ESPN
We know he hits harder than 99% of the athletes in MMA today, we know his hand speed is faster than 99% of the athletes in MMA today, and we know that when he gets taken down, he pops up fast.  Liddell nuthuggers used to answer this question with either "Chuck ground game is great, he just doesnt need it" or "Who needs a ground game when you knock people the fuck out all the time".  Same folks are calling HA overrated today.
If you call anyone from the EC, they'll tell you the story, Luke.  Do an interview with em.  Nice folks.  I've been on the bandwagon since talking to someone from the EC before the Jardine bout, and on Mania, I called his KO.  Check it out if you doubt.
