HUGE NEWS: Randy Couture Leaves UFC
In South Africa shooting scenes for his lead role in the upcoming feature film "The Scorpion King - Rise of the Akkadian," Couture made the announcement official in a letter to UFC president Dana White. The UFC's inability to land PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko played a prominent role in the decision to walk away, according to Couture.
"I appreciate this opportunity the sport of MMA and the UFC has given me," the UFC Hall-of-Famer said. "However, I'm tired of swimming upstream at this stage with the management of the UFC. It only makes sense at this point in my career to fight Fedor Emelianenko, and since he's now signed with another organization, I feel like it's time to resign and focus on my other endeavors."
His abrupt departure deals a significant blow to the world's most visible MMA organization. Couture was not only a beloved competitor - White once called him "the greatest fighter in UFC history" - but also a revered spokesman for a company that had long struggled to gain mainstream acceptance.
"Randy's contract was on a fight-by-fight basis, and that's the way he said he was always going to take it - fight by fight," said Matt Walker, Couture's agent at The Gersh Agency. "His acting career is accelerating at an astronomical rate, and without the support he felt some of his peers were receiving in the fight business, this was the logical choice.
This is a gigantic blow to the UFC, but not necessarily MMA. Perhaps Couture will be able to fight Fedor in M-1. One can only hope now.

This hurts like hell for the UFC...and honestly it really hurts the part of me that is strictly a fanboy.

Josh Barnett must be laughing his ass off today.
Re: ho...ly...sh...it....
The UFC losses their heavyweight champ at a time when their light heavyweight champ isn't looking his best because they couldn't get the one fighter that was bigger than the they are. Cot-dam.
Re: ho...ly...sh...it....
As someone said in an earlier thread...I don't think it is a bad thing for all the top talent to be in one organization. That is why I don't like the "monopoly" talk. If we want a true world champ we need the best fighters fighting each other.

Re: HUGE NEWS: Randy Couture Leaves UFC
I wonder if Randy will now join the secret org that bought out Fedor?
This is some crazy news.

Perhaps this is an agreement between organizations in those sports that does not exist in MMA?

Think Andrei Arlovski's phone is ringing right about now?
Re: HUGE NEWS: Randy Couture Leaves UFC
Hah, that's funny.
So...the thing is, don't the statements from Couture's camp sound like he's looking to retire rather than move orgs? Or is that maybe just playing hard-to-get to push up his value with M1?
No doubt, to US fans, Fedor vs. Couture would be huge (thanks to UFC's semi-promotion of Fedor in anticipation of signing him), but...presuming Fedor dispatched Couture in as convincing a manner as at least I would assume would occur, then where does that leave M1?

A question...
With Kongo beating Cro Cop I don't think they have an "ideal" champ. At least with the winner of the Sylvia/Vera fight will result in either a "3 time champ" or "new young gun champ."
I figure you do either that or you put the winner in with Nog and make THAT the title fight. Either way I think Nog's next fight needs to be for the heavyweight strap.

Re: A question...
I'm feeling Sylvia in the fight oddly enough. Same kind of feeling that led me to be the only person I know of that picked Houston Alexander to KO Keith Jardine.
My full predictions will be up next week.

Re: HUGE NEWS: Randy Couture Leaves UFC
Dana White didn't get the job done, and Couture wanted to fight Fedor. As much as this hurts the UFC, Couture sends a message the he expected the biggest MMA promotion to get the best heavyweight out there.
Get ready for some huge news to come!
Re: HUGE NEWS: Randy Couture Leaves UFC
He stated over and over again that it would be a dream matchup, he's wanted to fight Fedor, etc. Come on Dana, get a hint.
Maybe this will somehow get a point across that some of these fights aren't completely about the business? Haha, yeah right.
