Georges St. Pierre Cageside At UFC 143: Diaz Vs. Condit
Georges St. Pierre has not fought since his UFC 129 bout with Jake Shields due to a knee injury while training for a title defense. That defense was originally scheduled to be against Nick Diaz, but Diaz skipped press obligations and the UFC punished him by giving the title shot to Carlos Condit. Then GSP got injured and the Condit fight was postponed while Diaz ran through B.J. Penn so impressively that Dana White and the UFC brass decided to move Diaz back into the title shot.
GSP would then suffer a major injury to his ACL, shelving him until mid to late 2012. So when the UFC decided to put Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz against the cage from each other for the interim welterweight title, with the winner to face GSP upon his return, it's no surprise that Georges was cageside.
The UFC released video of Georges at the fight, and that can be seen here:
I'd be interested in seeing these videos continue for future title contender bouts.
UFC 143: In Defense of Nick Diaz's Weed Habit
This is a guest editorial by Jamie Kilstein. Mr. Kilstein is a professional comedian who's been seen on Conan, The Joe Rogan Podcast and Showtime. He hosts Citizen Radio.
In a sport where competitors are routinely elbowed in the face and choked unconscious (sometimes with their own limbs), the UFC's fans sure are a bunch of babies when it comes to weed.
This week Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer stated in an email that "...[Nick] Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites," after his fight at UFC 143.
UFC overlord Dana White said he was "beyond disappointed" in Diaz, and to paraphrase the hellish abyss we know as internet comments, "F**K DIAZ, YO SHULD FIRE HIS DICK 4 BEING STOOPID! NO HOMO!"
More On Nick Diaz
Nick Diaz Is to Blame, But So Are Meaningless Commission Marijuana Tests | Nick Diaz Should Be Released By The UFC | Nick Diaz' UFC 143 Drug Test Failure Was Inevitable |Dana White: 'I Am Beyond Disappointed | Nick Diaz Tests Positive For Marijuana | Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test
The thing is: there is no physical advantage to smoking pot in the fight game. Maybe you will come up with a new arm bar variation, but you will immediately forget it once another Walking Dead marathon comes on.
In the U.S no one has ever overdosed on marijuana, while alcohol kills more people than crack, cocaine, and heroin, combined.
But what do we see when we turn on the UFC's reality show The Ultimate Fighter? A house stacked with angry juice, and it always ends badly: people pissing on each other, fist fights, property destruction, etc. I've never gotten high and thrown a chair through a wall...mostly because I am sitting in that chair.
I get it. Rules are rules, even when they are shitty rules. But Nick needs marijuana to treat a legit medical condition. Shit, he even has a prescription.
It's hard for the general population to accept that weed has legitimate medical effects, since the general population doesn't take their insulin in Target parking lots, or on beanbag chairs listening to Bob Marley or Tool (depending on the mood). But ADHD and Anxiety can be crippling to some people.
Have you seen Nick interviewed? The dude is not acting. He hates it and can barely maintain eye contact. And leading up to this main event with three Primetime specials airing on FX -- on top of the regular press grind -- it was the most pressure that he had ever faced.
Diaz, although known as the bad boy, is one of the healthiest fighters the UFC has on it's roster. He is a vegan, leaning towards a mostly raw, whole food, plant based diet. In his down time, what does he do? Get into bar fights? Take steroids? Rip people off in shady real estate deals? No. He competes in fucking triathlons! He doesn't put anything into his body unless it will make him healthier.
Not long ago, light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was disqualified for using an illegal elbow against Matt Hamill. That is also a stupid rule, and people called it a stupid rule. The 12-6 elbow is banned like it's some sort of Dim Mak death touch, even though it's the same as other elbows. But back then people weren't screaming, "Jon Jones knows the rules! Fire him!" No. They were furious he was disqualified and had his back.
But Nick Diaz is not Jon Jones. Nick Diaz will never be on the tonight show, he won't be in a commercial, and if he did do a commercial, it would be the most awkward commercial of all time.
Nick Diaz fights. It's what he is good at. It's what we love watching him do. Nick Diaz needs help and support, not to have what he is brilliant at taken away from him.

Rashad Evans Vs. Jon Jones Rivalry Covered In ESPN The Magazine
When UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones faces Rashad Evans at April's UFC 145, it will be a major moment between two rivals and a fight that many have waited to finally see unfold after a variety of injuries repeatedly set things back.
If you listen to UFC president Dana White, ESPN has become somewhat of a rival for him since the promotion's deal with Fox was announced, but that didn't stop the Worldwide Leader In Sports from covering the Jones vs. Evans beef in their recent issue that focuses on rivalries, out on newsstands now and also available online.
Entitled "Enemies With Benefits", the story briefly touches on the Jones/Evans backstory with a heavy focus on White's role in "orchestrating the breakup" and how the rise in top fight teams has prevented the UFC from putting together top fights between guys in those camps.
From writer Ryan McGee's piece:
What's good for (Greg) Jackson's camp, though, is bad business for White, who has always insisted that No. 1 contenders challenge champions, regardless of team affiliation. In Evans and Jones, White saw a chance to make a stand against camp culture. So he started working on both men, especially Evans, who badly wanted to retrieve the title belt he lost in a fight to Lyoto Machida in 2009.
"I told Rashad, 'Those guys at camp are your friends; you like hanging out with them,'" White says. "But camp is not your family. All athletes have a very small window of opportunity to make money and achieve great things in front of millions so they're remembered when it's over. You're going to put that on a shelf because of your 'friends' and your training camp 'family'? When s-- goes wrong, do you think they're going to help you pay your bills? No."
White warned both fighters that the day was coming when they would have no choice but to fight. Neither paid much attention, publicly reaffirming their friendship vows until Jones casually mentioned in a TV interview in March 2011 that if White ever forced him, maybe he would fight his mentor. That one "maybe" was the first landed blow at the firewall around the friendship -- and their New Mexico camp. Evans took the comment to heart. Those seeds of doubt White had planted had taken root.
The article then completely shifts to talking about rivalries between friends in the NBA, NASCAR and NCAA track and field before adding a few MMA paragraphs at the end, so take the overall tone and structure for what it's worth.

Bellator 135-Pound Champion Zach Makovsky Defending In Mid April
It will be more than 17 months from when Zach Makovsky first won the Bellator bantamweight title to when he will first defend it, but that day will finally come on Friday, April 13, when recent tournament winner Eduardo Dantas challenges him at Bellator 65 in Atlantic City, NJ.
Makovsky (14-2, 6-0 Bellator) became the promotion's first 135-pound champion with a unanimous decision win over Ed West. The 29-year-old has posted victories over Chad Robichaux (third round TKO) and Ryan Roberts (first round submission) since then, both in 2011 non-title fights. The EliteXC alum has won eight in a row.
He will face a dangerous opponent in the 22-year-old Dantas (13-2, 3-0 Bellator), who won Bellator's second-ever bantamweight tournament with wins over Wilson Reis, West and then Alexis Vila in the finals. The Brazilian has won six in a row and has shown the ability to finish via T/KO or submission in his young career.
The undercard will feature the semifinals of the season 6 185-pound tournament with some combination of Maiquel Falcao, Brian Rogers, Giva Santana, Vitor Vianna, Norman Paraisy, Bruno Santos, Vyacheslav Vasilevsky and Victor O'Donnell fighting. Also, Lyman Good faces LeVon Maynard in a qualifier for the next welterweight tournament.
The event airs at 8 PM EST on MTV2.

2012 World MMA Flyweight Scouting Report: #2 - Jose Maria Tome
| Name: | Jose Maria Tome |
| Nickname: | No Chance |
| Age: | 30 |
| Height: | 5'5" |
| Location: | Brazil |
This is a guest post by Rory MacLeod (smoogy)
In recent years, the formal adoption of fighting in the featherweight, bantamweight and flyweight divisions by the Ultimate Fighting Championships has transformed the landscape of mixed martial arts. The industry titan's acceptance of these weight classes in turn has been ratified by fight promotions everywhere as an exciting addition to their conventional offerings. Formerly aimless top athletes like UFC bantamweight contender Renan Barao now gravitate toward the Octagon while up-and-coming fighters find increasing opportunities to compete in their optimal weight class. In the flyweight division, the transformation hasn't begun in earnest just yet, but Ceara, Brazil's Jose Maria Tome (28-3) has the credentials to replicate Barao's ascent from diamond-in-the-rough beginnings to elite status.
As a member of top Luta Livre gym Renovacao Fight Team, Jose Maria is unsurprisingly well-rounded and aggressively devoted to finishing fights. Of his 28 career victories, 23 have come via form of knockout or submission. Like Barao, Tome has fought almost exclusively near his home base in Limoeiro do Norte, Ceara, often facing underwhelming (or simply overwhelmed) opposition while keeping a very busy schedule. But unlike Renan, who mainly relied on his wrestling and jiu-jitsu talents until recently, Jose Maria is equally happy to deliver beatings with his precision combination striking to the head and body or by breaking opponents down with suffocating top control on the mat.
If the aptly nicknamed "No Chance" has a weakness, it's his proclivity to freewheel on offense to the verge of showboating, leaving his guard down in the process. But aside from a decision loss in his pro debut (again, like Barao), Tome has only fallen against larger prospect Leandro Higo and top flyweight contender Jussier da Silva. Since those early 2008 losses, Jose Maria is on a sixteen fight unbeaten streak with five wins (four via submission) in 2011.
Just barely qualifying for the report at the upper age limit of 30, the time is now for Jose Maria Tome to retire from terrorizing his provincial rivals in Brazil and hit the world stage. Renan Barao was a lightning rod for criticism of prospects with resumes inflated by easy wins over veritable cannon fodder, but given the right opportunity he put those notions to rest and now finds himself in line to challenge for the UFC Bantamweight Championship. Tome may never reach such lofty heights, but at the very least he has earned the chance to give it a try.

Asian MMA: ONE FC CEO Victor Cui Talks How His Past Experience Gives Him An Edge Over Other Organizations
ONE FC's 2nd event is in a few hours, and their Owner and CEO, Victor Cui took a few moments out of his busy schedule to speak to BloodyElbow.com about numerous topics.
Cui has been part of ESPN Star Sports for several years, and he was the head Martial Combat before starting ONE FC. Lots of people enjoyed the promotion's debut event last September, but he promises this one won't even compare to that.
"Every show I want it better. I guarantee this show is much better than my first one, and I guarantee my next one will also be better." says Victor Cui in an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow, "The changes that are important to me, aren't just about the fight card. This is sport entertainment."

"Most promoters, most organizers, are so busy just running their event to make their show happen, because they haven't run a lot of events." says Cui, "I've already ran over 13 MMA events, I've booked over 300 fighters, so I'm on a phone call to every single fighter on the region already. My team and all of us have run some of the best in sporting events, and running a world class event in MMA is easy to me, because I've been doing that for the past decade in Asia."
He credits a lot of his success with his past experience, and he says that's one of the advantages he has over the other organizations in Asia.
"I have the best partners, the best suppliers, the best sponsors, the best government contacts. All of those things that some of these guys have to figure out, I've already have in place," Cui continues, "I started the biggest 9-ball billiards event in Indonesia. I did the same thing with Formula Drift. It's very similar to ONE FC, Asia's best, going around from city to city, with a quality television broadcast."
"Running the events are easy for me, so it allows me to focus on making the fan experience really good. It's like a rock star atmosphere. That's why we have celebrities, VIP's, and socialites all want to come because it's like the night to go to, and they don't want to miss it."
After the jump, Victor Cui details his thoughts on building a fight card.
