Strikeforce Rockhold Vs. Jardine Results: Luke Rockhold Defends Middleweight Belt

Luke Rockhold defeats Keith Jardine by Knockout at 4:26 in the first round.

Luke Rockhold entered the cage without his Strikeforce middleweight title, almost saying that he wasn't losing the fight as Jardine was undeserving of the title shot. There was a lot of criticism as most assumed that Rockhold's first defense would be against Tim Kennedy. However, an undisclosed injury kept Kennedy sidelined. Announcer Mauro Renallo called Jardine's stand up "herky-jerky" throughout much of the fight while Rockhold attempted to cut the cage off.

Luke Rockhold landed several punches which stunned Jardine. He collapsed Jardine against the cage before raining down punches. It got to the point that the announcers were asking outloud when the referee would stop the fight. It would come to an end with under a minute left in the first round. Herb Dean stepped in at 4:26 to save Jardine from more damage.

Rockhold is undefeated in Strikeforce and has successfully defended his title in ninth career victory. Keith Jardine was an underdog. He is now 17-10-2 in his career.

Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine - Live Results and Play-By-Play for Showtime Main Card

Photo

As with every major show, Bloody Elbow will be here to bring you live results, play by play and commentary for Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine. Our live coverage will start with the Showtime Extreme coverage of the undercard fights at 8 p.m. ET and continue through the main card on Showtime starting at 10 p.m. ET. so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

This post will cover live results and thoughts for the main card on Showtime.

The main event of the evening sees Luke Rockhold put his Strikeforce middleweight title on the line against former UFC star Keith Jardine. In the co-main event it's Robbie Lawler taking on Adlan Amagov in a middleweight fight. Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Muhammed Lawal squares off with Lorenz Larkin in a bout with serious implications at 205. Rounding out the main card is a great welterweight fight between up-and-comers Tyron Woodley and Jordan Mein and a welterweight bout between Tyler Stinson and Tarec Saffiedine.

Make sure to come back during the event and share your thoughts as the event goes down.

The broadcast is now live.

Tyler Stinson vs. Tarec Saffiedine - Round 1 - Leg kick by Saffiedine but Stinson comes back with a nice flurry of punches. Leg kick by Stinson. Right hook gets in for Saffiedine. Head kick by Tarec is barely blocked. Stinson with a good left hand. Nice combination from Tarec. Stinson catches him with a hard elbow in the clinch and Saffiedine is hurt badly. They end up on the ground with Stinson looking to lock in the armbar but Saffiedine escapes. Overhand left by Stinson. Saffiedine is bleeding above his eye and it's opening up the left hand of Stinson. 10-9 Stinson

Round 2 - Stinson chasing early and Tarec with a counter right. Leg kick by Stinson. Stinson with a nice combo now. Head kick by Safiedine. Stinson is just using aggression so well that Tarec can't really get anything going. Saffiedine gets him to the ground and is on top inside the guard of Stinson. He's working some ground and pound but not doing a ton of damage. Elbows by Tarec now as he opens up a bit. Saffiedine taking over now with the use of his elbows as he has Stinson bloodied up fairly badly. 10-9 Saffiedine.

Round 3 - Accidental low blow by Tarec right away in the round and we have a short break. Saffiedine explodes through a double leg and has the takedown. Tarec with a nice right hand and then walks Stinson to the cage to reduce his movement. Saffiedine working the punches and elbows again and Stinson really looks to have nothing off his back. Eventually they're stood up despite Tarec appearing to be doing work. Both guys bleeding pretty badly. Stinson with a solid shot. Good opening bout and I gave the final round to Saffiedine 10-9 and the fight 29-28.

Official scorecards: 29-28 Stinson, 29-28 Saffiedine, 29-28 Saffiedine. Tarec Saffiedine wins by split decision.

Jordan Mein vs. Tyron Woodley - Round 1 - A lot of feinting and feeling out early. Woodley waits for his chance and shoots in for a takedown. Woodley keeps pushing for it but Mein defends well until the referee restarts them. Stinson with a wild right hand that Woodley ducks. Uppercut by Mein and Woodley takes him down and was trying to set up an arm triangle. Woodley retaining top position and throwing short punches. Mein tries to scramble but Woodley stays on top of him. Very good elbow by Woodley and he tries for an arm triangle again but Mein escapes to his feet. Knee in the clinch by Woodley. THe round ends and it should be a safe 10-9 Woodley round.

Round 2 - Leg kick from Mein. Good overhand right by Woodley hurts Mein. Mein stumbles back to the cage and Woodley clinches him and gets the takedown into Mein's half guard. Woodley just controlling him now. Mein is trying to throw some elbows off his back. More of the same for basically the entire round. 10-9 Woodley.

Round 3 - Mein tries to throw a knee when Tyron shoots in, it lands a bit but Woodley takes him down of it anyway. And we're back to it. Let's be real, this fight is horribly boring. The crowd boos and rightfully so. They're finally stood up, Mein throws a front kick and slips. Woodley clinches him until the fight ends. Everyone boos, I am happy the fight is over. 10-9 Woodley.

Official Scorecards: 29-28 Mein, 29-28 Woodley, 30-27 Woodley. Tyron Woodley wins by split decision.

Lorenz Larkin vs. "King" Mo Lawal - Round 1 - Mo with a jab that comes up short. no Mo shoots and quickly gets the takedown. Mo opening up with punches now. Mo is beating him up here and busting Larkin up. Lorenz has tried to find ways back to his feet but Mo is too strong with too good of balance. Kim Winslow stands them up for no real reason as Mo was working very actively. Larkin with a right hand that is blocked. Larkin opens up before the end of the round and gets in a little bit. 10-9 Lawal.

Round 2 - Mo goes for a takedown, Larkin lands a few punches but Mo is able to muscle him to the ground. Mo opening up with very big shots and Larkin is hurt, Larkin looks like he's out and finally Kim Winslow jumps in to stop it. "King" Mo Lawal wins by TKO (punches), 1:32 of round 2.

Adlan Amagov vs. Robbie Lawler - Round 1 - Lawler comes out quickly with wild strikes and Amagov grabs him and takes him down. Lawler standing up and Amagov has his back standing. Now they're on the ground again with Amagov on top. Amagov has Lawler turtled up and he throws a knee to the head. That's not good. They take a point from Amagov, rightfully so. Lawler with a flying knee that misses but he unloads with punches and Amagov is out cold. Well, that's....that's a way to pay him back for the illegal knee. Robbie Lawler wins by KO (punches), round 1.

Strikeforce Middleweight Championship: Luke Rockhold (c) vs. Keith Jardine - Round 1 - Jardine landing a little bit early. Left kick lands. Rockhold pushing Jardine into the cage. They're trading knees and Rockhold is getting the better of them. Elbow by Rockhold lands solid. Head kick by Rockhold just misses. Great spinning back kick by Rockhold lands to the body of Jardine. Punches by Rockhold land and now a few more drive him back. Left hand by Jardine. Rockhold catches him with a shot that may have been to the back of the head but it was in the action and not intentional so not really an illegal blow. Jardine is able to recover though. Big right hand and Jardine is hurt badly! Rockhold follows up and Jardine goes down again. A bunch of follow up shots as the ref won't step in and finally the fight is over. Luke Rockhold wins by TKO (punches), 4:26 of Round 1.

Strikeforce Rockhold Vs Jardine Results: Tyron Woodley Victorious In Boring Affair

via sherdog.com

Tyron Woodley defeated Jordan Mein by Split Decision. The Judges scored the fight 29-28 Jordan Mein, 29-28 Woodley, 30-27 Woodley.

Woodley landed a body kick early. Mein backed Woodley against the fence. Woodley exploded forward looking for a single leg but Mein defended well. Mein landed an uppercut but Woodley dropped and completed a takedown. Immediately as they hit the ground Woodley attempted an arm triangle. Mein quickly postured up but Woodley drove him back down to the mat. Huge elbow from Woodley. Another elbow from Woodley lands but Mein uses it to stand back up. Knee from Woodley from the clinch.

Overhand right landed for Woodley and backed Mein up. Woodley clinched and then hit the takedown working from Jordan Mein's half-guard. Woodley working just enough to keep the fight on the ground. Mein opened up with some elbows that may or may not have been completely legal. The ref allowed the fighters to work despite not really providing an exciting round.

Mein attempted a knee and Woodley used it to complete a takedown. Woodley continued his not-so-relentless attack on Jordan Mein. He made no attempted to pass guard, content to work just enough to keep the fight on the ground. He'll be the Strikeforce welterweight champion and the crowd hates him. Mein works for a keylock from guard and the referee stands the fighters up. Ankle pick from Woodley was unsuccessful as Mein sprawled out. Jordan Mein attempted the slowest takedown as the round came to a conclusion.

Tyron Woodley entered the fight 9-0 and a big win over Paul Daley. He's the number one contender for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title. Jordan Mein is 22-7 in his career and came in on a five fight winning streak. He is 1-1 in the organization.

Our live coverage will start with the Showtime Extreme coverage of the undercard fights at 8 p.m. ET and continue through the main card on Showtime starting at 10 p.m. ET. so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

This post will cover live results and thoughts for the undercard on Showtime Extreme.

Four fights are planned for the undercard broadcast including a welterweight bout between Nah-Shon Burrell taking on James Terry. Gian Villante squares off with Trevor Smith in a light heavyweight bout. Rounding out the undercard is a lightweight fight between Ricky Legere and Chris Spang as well as a 160 pound bout between Estevan Payan and Alonzo Martinez.

Make sure to come back during the event and share your thoughts as the event goes down.

Our main card coverage can be read here.

The broadcast has kicked off.

Estevan Payan vs. Alonzo Martinez - Round 1 - Martinez with a few low kicks and a knee that gets in to the body. Both men landing hard shots now. Martinez is landing really hard here for all the talking the Strikeforce announcers did about Payan dominating great fighters in the gym. Payan is starting to settle down and calm down with the wild punches and with technique comes success as he's starting to land. Payan took over in the later part of the round with straighter punches and less looping attempts to connect with a "bomb." 10-9 Payan after a rocky open.

Round 2 - A little more measured here early and now Payan with a great 1-2 combo that shoots the mouthpiece out of Martinez's mouth. Martinez is getting picked apart here. Payan's jab and straight right are landing with regularity. Jab lands and twists the head of Martinez. A big knee got in there for Payan also that round. 10-9 Payan.

Round 3 - Martinez is coming out hard trying to make something happen with leg kicks in this round. Left hook by Payan gets in and a body shot as well. Martinez goes to the body with a punch and a kick also. Big uppercut by Payan. Another right uppercut gets in. Payan is back to tagging Martinez after the opening minute. Martinez with two badly telegraphed takedown attempts and Payan just throws him off with ease. Great right uppercut to the body and a right hand to the head. 10-9 Payan for the sweep on my card.

Official Scorecards: 30-27 across all three scorecards. Estevan Payan wins by unanimous decision.

Ricky Legere vs. Chris Spang - Legere coming forward while Spang circles. Legere with a big takedown early. Spang tries for an armbar but Legere defends well. A few punches and a short elbow by Legere from on top. Legere passes to side control. Spang is eventually able to get to his feet and he lands a kick to the head so Legere pushes him into the cage. Spang jumps to pull guard with a guillotine and Legere almost tapped but the round ends. 10-9 Legere.

Round 2 - Spang opens up with a nice flurry and then a big knee but Legere uses it to get the takedown. Legere with some elbows and a hammerfist. Brief scramble but Legere remains on top in Spang's full guard. The referee stands them up and Spang lands a right hand. Spang with a spinning backfist that Legere ducks under and tries for the takedown. Spang defending but Legere pushes him into the cage, picks him up and takes him down. 10-9 Legere.

Round 3 - Right hand by Spang lands solid. Head kick is blocked by Legere. Big right by Spang. Spang with ill-advised kicks and he gets taken back down. Nothing much happens, they're stood up and Legere takes him back down. Spang gets back to his feet, lands a combo and Legere crumbles. Spang tries for a rear naked choke and Legere survives, gets on top and flurries as the fight ends. 10-9 Legere.

Official scorecards: 29-28 across the board, all for Ricky Legere.

Trevor Smith vs. Gian Villante - Round 1 - Villante ends up on top quickly, Smith gets up and eats a knee for his troubles. Smith with a kick to the body. Villante with a nice left hook. A few more shots by Villante as Smith tries to get his leg, Villante keeps landing hammerfists while Smith doesn't do anything so referee Kim Winslow calls an end to it. Gian Villante wins by TKO (punches), 1:05 of Round 1.

Nah-Shon Burrell vs. James Terry - Round 1 - Burrell with an overhand right and then Terry lands a low blow. Terry looks for a takedown after they trade on the feet for a bit. Terry manages to get the takedown. Terry tries to work a bit but Burrell stands up. Terry gets a single leg now and gets into full mount. Burrell just sits up and stand up...when mounted. A huge show of strength there. Terry tries to take the back off a takedown attempt. Terry with another takedown and he's winning this just through takedowns with nothing else. 10-9 Terry

Round 2 - Head kick by Terry is blocked. Uppercut and a left hand by Burrell. Big right hand by Terry really buzzed Burrell. Burrell needs to do something different here because he's not winning on the feet now either. Hard leg kick by Terry and then a nice right hand counter. Terry with a right hand in return. Burrell finding some success of the counter now. Terry with another takedown with about half a minute left. 10-9 Terry.

Round 3 - Terry circling around an Burrell is trying to stalk him. Burrell landing very hard shots now and they clinch against the cage. Burrell with some more big shots when they separate. Burrell with a right hand and now an uppercut. Big knee now. Burrell tagging him and Terry is basically running away. Right hand by Burrell hurts Terry badly and Burrell can't really follow up. Terry with an uppercut. Terry now with a shot, looking for a takedown in the last 30 seconds. Burrell gives it up chasing a guillotine from bad position. 10-9 Burrell makes it 29-28 Terry on my card.

Official scorecards: 29-28 Terry, 29-28 Burrell, 29-28 Burrell. Nah-Shon Burrell wins by split decision. ...wow

Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine - Main Event Dissection

Fighter images via Strikeforce.com

Ahh, what the hell. You don't visit Bloody Elbow for impartial opinions. Luke Rockhold will probably make his first successful title defense against Keith Jardine in the main attraction of the Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine event tonight, but I want Jardine to win.

Don't get me wrong -- I have nothing against Rockhold. He proved his legitimate talent in upsetting Ronaldo Souza; a title fight the betting lines portrayed as a cakewalk for the reigning champion. Rockhold sashayed around the cage with a whirlwind of striking finesse to dethrone the BJJ phenom in one of the biggest upsets of 2011, flashing quick combinations and flicking out Tornado kicks to add some style points to the stupefying achievement.

I'm not really even a fan of Jardine either. Much like watching the appalling flick The Human Centipede, my face contorts into a look of wretched and confused horror when he does the whole nipple-tweak shtick. He might have the cheesiest nickname in sports history, even if you include Kin Corn Karn from the ancient "Pro Wrestling" game for Nintendo. His punches remind me of my cat when I playfully dangle string in front of his face.

Please receive that as good-natured ribbing, as the reason I'm siding with Jardine is because the peanut gallery is clowning him a little too hard for my taste. Poking fun here and there is one thing, but this match up has been greeted with bellowing laughter, construed as a virtual embarrassment and discarded as an ominous sign of Strikeforce's emaciated roster ever since it was announced.

Jeers about Jardine's glass jaw run rampant, yet he's been stopped by Wanderlei Silva (one of the greatest knockout artists in MMA history), top-15 light-heavyweights in Thiago Silva and Ryan Bader, Houston Alexander (who came out of nowhere with unexpected punching power in Sokoudjou-like fashion) and Travis Wiuff in Jardine's third pro fight. Additionally, he's gone toe-to-toe with a few elite strikers in Quinton Jackson (decision loss), Chuck Liddell (decision win), Brandon Vera (split-decision win), Gegard Mousasi (draw) and Forrest Griffin (yeah, I said it; TKO win).

Finally, this is a guy who trains at the best camp under the best coach and, with a rap sheet punctuated by the who's who of 205-pounds, is now dropping down to 185 to face a young fighter with exactly one top-shelf win to his name.

I'm just saying. Jardine is far from a lock and deserves to be the underdog, but let's not forget that everyone was poo-pooing Rockhold's chances just as much going into the "Jacare" fight. Having fulfilled my quota for emotional whining, I will do you the honor of staying as unbiased and objective as possible in the match up analysis that awaits in the full entry.
