It didn't take long for UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and title challenger Daniel Cormier to make their way onto ESPN's SportsCenter, a mere hours after the two engaged in a big brawl at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas during the UFC 178 media day. SC anchor Todd Grisham interviewed both men on camera on the 5 PM ET hour of the famed sports news program, and here are some of the highlights from the broadcast, as relayed by the UFC's official Twitter account, and MMA Fighting's David St. Martin and Dave Doyle:
Jones and DC NOW join SC. Jones apologized to the MGM, DC shaking his head calling him fake.— David St. Martin (@SaintMMA) August 4, 2014
Jones: "I reacted in self-defense by beating up Daniel." Cormier reacts by laughing.— Dave Doyle (@davedoylemma) August 4, 2014
Jones: His ego is through the roof. He has a personal vendetta against me.— Dave Doyle (@davedoylemma) August 4, 2014
Jones: DC being an Olympic level wrestler, I thought it would be a lot harder to get him to the floor.— Dave Doyle (@davedoylemma) August 4, 2014
DC: Whatever, he's a punk, he's a liar, he's a whole lot of things he should not be proud of being.— Dave Doyle (@davedoylemma) August 4, 2014
Todd Grisham was quick to point out that Jones' calm, composed, and polite demeanor during the interview ran counter to his actions today plus his tweets sent to Cormier after the brawl, which was a continuation of the trash-talking and taunting. Grisham told Jones that "that doesn't seem like the kind of persona you're projecting right now."
Jones offered this retort:
"These things were factual. We did get in a little scuffle just now. Daniel Cormier being an Olympic-level wrestler, I thought it would be a lot harder to get him to the floor. Sure enough, if you look up the videos -- that I'm not very proud of -- He was the one getting off his back and people were pulling me off the top of him. So yeah, that's what I say, and it's true."
Jones and Cormier will also be on Fox Sports Live tonight at midnight ET/9 PM PT on Fox Sports 1 before resting up and appearing at another media day in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
