This past Sunday night saw the end of an era when Frankie Edgar put on a crushing display of dominance in his stoppage of UFC legend, B.J. Penn. Edgar finds himself in a unique position in that he was the catalyst that finally made Penn call his long and heralded career to an emotional halt. The win catapulted the New Jersey native into the Number 2 position in the rankings, making him a prime candidate for a title contention fight.
In a report following the UFC Tonight program, it was relayed that Edgar wanted to fight fellow Featherweight Top 5 contender, Cub Swanson, however, Bloody Elbow obtained a follow-up interview where he stated a preference on fighting Number 1 contender, Chad Mendes next. He also said he wouldn't be averse to a catch weight fight with perennial Bantamweight top contender, Urijah Faber. Here's what he had to say:
Bloody Elbow: In a recent interview, Lorenzo Fertitta hinted that if Jose Aldo wasn't ready to return to action by October, there might be a fight to determine an interim champion. Obviously, the two guys outside yourself that would be considered are Chad Mendes and Cub Swanson. If you had to choose an opponent from those two, which would it be?
Frankie Edgar: Either one, really. I guess it would be Chad, though, since he was in line for the title shot. The fight was already lined up. I'd say Chad would be the guy, assuming that the other guy would be me. It might not even be me, who knows.
I want to fight either of those guys, whether it's interim or not interim, because they're the path to the title. To be honest, the interim title is nothing to me. I want a real title, but if it does take fighting for an interim belt, I'm all in.
Bloody Elbow: There is a lot of fan interest in a possible fight between you and Urijah Faber. Would you ever be able to make the drop to 135 or maybe meet at a catch weight of 140 if the circumstances and money were right?
Frankie Edgar: 135 might be a stretch, but I think I could do 140. I probably could make 135, but I don't know how well I would perform or how my body would feel. 140 is much more ideal for me, and if the right situation arises, I could see that fight happening.
Bloody Elbow: How much weight do you put on from the time you weigh in to fight time?
Frankie Edgar: I'm probably around 157. I walk around at 160, but I don't get back to that. Generally around 11 or 12 pounds.
Bloody Elbow: iPhone or Android?
Frankie Edgar: iPhone. I'm a lifelong member of the Dark Side.
Bloody Elbow: Favorite food; if you could eat one thing every day for a week, what would it be?
Frankie Edgar: Pizza, and I do eat it every day sometimes. (His favorite topping is sausage)
Bloody Elbow: What's the number one vacation destination on your bucket list that you haven't visited yet?
Frankie Edgar: I haven't been to Europe yet. Italy will be the first place I go. A lot of my family is there and the food is amazing, so I imagine I'll be heading there soon.
