Conor McGregor faces off with Diego Brando in the main event of UFC Dublin next weekend. This will be Conor’s first fight since tearing his ACL in a bout with Max Holloway last August.
He is well past the knee injury in his mind. "Ring rust is just an excuse for the slackers" says Conor McGregor in this interview I did with him a couple of weeks ago. The knee won’t affect him in this fight and he has worked very hard to be able to say that. With top physical therapy and a focused mind he has put that injury behind him. Sure enough, ACL is an extremely hard injury to sustain and he might tear it again in the future, but it won’t affect him on July 19.
Having seen him train and fight I firmly believe he can reach the top. He is brass and outloud but he also works extremely hard. Talent and hard work don’t always go hand to hand but when they do you have a recipe for success.
He likes training at odd hours and I was lucky enough to roll with him on a Sunday night at 1 in the morning. As he says in the video above, sometimes he just feels like going to the gym and blast music and hit the bag or roll, doesn’t matter if it’s 1 or 2 in the morning.
After learning about his ACL injury he immediately wanted to set some sort of world record for returning in combat. He won’t set any world record (not sure if there is any, and there shouldn’t be) when he returns against Diego Brandao but he feels he is better than before the injury, and that is huge for an athlete returning from an serious injury.
The fight against Brandao will be very interesting. Brandao will be his strongest opponent to date and I would not be surprised to see Brandao try to take Conor down. After all, UFC fans haven’t seen him on his back yet and his takedown defense is still a question mark.
For a fight fan it will be very interesting to see Conor in action again. I will certainly be rooting with him along with 99% of the audience on 19th of July. I just can’t wait.
