Miguel Cotto def. Sergio Martinez, TKO, round 10 0:06
What was a much anticipated, hotly debated fight turned out to be a shockingly one-sided affair. From the opening bell, Miguel Cotto absolutely dominated Sergio Martinez. He showed that same crisp offense and clean technique that we saw against Delvin Rordriguez, dropping Martinez 3 times in round 1. Though Martinez came back and made it a bit of a fight at times, he was never truly able to land anything of note all fight, while instead, Cotto landed a staggering 54% of his power punches - many of them his trademark left hook.
In the 9th round, Cotto landed hard shots that repeatedly staggered Martinez. Martinez's knee touched that mat for a 4th knockdown in the fight, and in the Martinez corner after the round, a heated debate led to the corner waving off the fight in a wise decision to protect their fighter.
With this win, Miguel Cotto is the first ever Puerto Rican 4 division champion, and clearly has more big fights on the horizon.
For Martinez, you have to question if this will be the end of the line. He had an amazing run, but he clearly doesn't have the physical tools anymore to stay in it.
In the semi-main event, Marvin Sonsona took a close split decision win over Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr in a match that at times more closely resembled an MMA fight, with headbutts, takedowns, and lowblows all over. A good win for Sonsona on paper, but not a great performance in the ring.
Also on the card, Andy Lee came back from an early knockdown to score a decisive and impressive KO victory over John Jackson, while Javier Maciel took an upset majority decision win over Jorge Melendez.
