UFC 175: Lyoto Machida talks title shot against Chris Weidman

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Former Light Heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida tells AXS-TV's Pat Miletich and Michael Schiavello about his big plans for dethroning the Middleweight champ Chris Weidman at UFC 175 in July.

Lyoto Machida might have been the UFC's second choice to be Chris Weidman's first UFC title fight that didn't involve Anderson Silva, but he's ready all the same. The promotion initially wanted Vitor Belfort, who's been on a red-hot TRT infused tear in Brazil for the past couple of years, but you gotta take the bad with the good and the Nevada State Athletic Commission nixed Belfort after Vitor failed a suprise drug test in February.

The bout had originally been planned for UFC 173 in May but was pushed back to July so Weidman could have a needed knee surgery. Machida has historically feasted on wrestlers with some highlight reel KO's over luminaries such as Rashad Evans, Randy Couture, Ryan Bader, Mark Munoz and decision wins over Dan Henderson and Tito Ortiz. He has also dropped a pair of decisions against wrestlers Phil Davis and Quinton Jackson that many felt he should have won.

Here's Lyoto talking to Miletich and Schiavello cage side at last night's RFA event on AXS-TV:
