Urijah Faber on preliminary card position: ‘It actually makes a little more sense’

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber discussed his position on the UFC 175 fight card, which he considers to be a smart decision for more exposure.

Urijah Faber is not concerned with being placed on the preliminary portion of the UFC 175 fight card. In fact, he believes the UFC's decision to place him there "makes a little more sense."

The former WEC Featherweight champion indirectly caused a wave of frustration from fans and pundits alike when it was announced that he would be headlining the preliminary portion of next weekend's UFC 175 fight card against Alex Caceres. While his supporters are clearly unhappy with the promotion's decision, Faber is perfectly comfortable with his position on the card, as he thinks it would allow for more exposure with the "cheap skates" that will not purchase the PPV.

"You know, for me it actually makes a little more sense," Faber told Submission Radio. "It's the main event on the free card, the Fox Sports 1 card, so you know I think as far as exposure goes, I'll probably get a wider view for more viewers that don't have to pay. I think the PPV numbers haven't necessarily been as high as they used to be, so for me it makes more sense. I'm the featured fight on the free card right before the PPV, and I don't get piece of that PPV anyway, so I'd rather more people watched the fights."

When asked to weigh out the possible pros and cons of fighting on the prelims instead of a PPV card, Faber admitted that it does not affect him either way in terms of his pay, and he would much rather compete on a free card in front of more sets of eyes.

"No, I'd much rather, I actually asked to be on the main event of the free card because that's a fight that everybody's gonna see for free. And all the cheap skates aren't gonna be able to watch the PPV card. So for me it makes more sense to get the exposure, because it doesn't affect me either way as far as pay goes."

UFC 175 takes place July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
