UFC: San Antonio results - Cub Swanson decisions Jeremy Stephens in main event

USA TODAY Sports

Cub Swanson came back from a rough second round to take over the fight against Jeremy Stephens and stake his claim to a UFC featherweight title fight.

Cub Swanson said coming into his fight with Jeremy Stephens that he wasn't going to beg for a title shot should he come away the winner.

Swanson was able to emerge with his hand raised in an entertaining bout and stayed true to his word, "I don't beg," was Swanson's statement to Jon Anik following the victory.

Swanson and Stephens came out strong in round one, Swanson working good leg kicks while Stephens tried to line up some big right hands. It was a competitive round, but the action didn't seriously pick up until the second round.

In the second, Stephens came on strong, landing some seriously heavy overhand rights and buzzing Swanson. At that point there seemed to be a considerable difference in the power in the strikes of the two men, with Stephens shots seeming far more concussive.

Swanson came back strong in round three, landing a hard liver kick and then a series of thudding punches to Stephens' face. Swanson was chasing him around the cage, seemingly on the verge of getting the stoppage, only to be unable to get the finish. That round set the tone for the rest of the fight as he would hurt Stephens again in the final frame, after fully taking over the fight.

The final scores were announced with Swanson taking a unanimous decision 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.
