The flyweight division has had some big fights of late but the results didn't do much to shake up the top of the division in the eyes of the SB Nation rankings panel. There are a few new entries, but that's only because we haven't covered this division in a while. So, here you go.
As usual, our panel consists of two members from each of the three SB Nation MMA sites - Ariel Helwani and Dave Doyle from MMA Fighting; Thomas Myers and Alex Giardini from MMA Mania; and finally, Dallas Winston and yours truly from Bloody Elbow. Here's the usual fancy chart:
(Scoring: Fighters are given 10 points for a first-place vote, nine points for a second, etc., down to one point for 10th place. The results are then tallied up and presented here. Official SB Nation rankings policy: Fighters under commission suspension are ineligible to be ranked during the duration of their suspension or if they have licensing issues. As of this writing, this does not affect any flyweights of note).
As expected, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson continues to sit on top after his successful title defense at UFC 174. Joseph Benavidez managed to hold off John Dodson for the second spot despite Dodson's impressive recent showing. That left him at three, with Ian McCall taking the four spot. Ali Bagautinov rounded out the top five.
At number six is John Lineker, who really needs to make weight. John Moraga and Zach Makovsky tied for the seven spot, with Moraga being the first guy that wasn't unanimously ranked. Jussier Formiga was just one point behind them but had to settle for the nine spot. The final spot went to Brad Pickett. Fighters receiving votes but not making the top ten were Tim Elliott, Chris Cariaso, and Justin Scoggins.
