Chael Sonnen has recently decided to hang up his MMA gloves following a 16-year career that saw him gain UFC title shots in two divisions and compile a 28-14-1 record overall. He won't be competing in Mixed Martial Arts anymore, but the charismatic wrestler isn't done headlining shows just yet.
Although not officially announced by the promotion, MMAFighting reports that, Sonnen has agreed to compete at Metamoris 4 and will hold top billing on the submission-only promotion opposite one of the greatest jiujitsu artists today, in Andre Galvao.
Sonnen is a fantastic wrestler, and while he has submitted 8 men in his career including a BJJ blackbelt in Mauricio Rua on his last victory, he will still be in an uphill battle coming in to this match. Galvao ended his MMA career with a 5-3 record in 2010, and since then he has gone back to his roots and racked up medals in all of the prestigious grappling tournaments such as ADCC, Mundials, Pan-Ams and WPJJC.
Other matches that are set on the card also feature several figures that are familiar to MMA fans. Former UFC champ and catch wrestling staple, Josh Barnett is set to take on multiple time ADCC champ Dean Lister, while BJJ World champion and former UFC fighter Vinny Magalhaes will grapple one of the top young jiujitsu stars in Keenan Cornelius.
The 4th edition of this submission-only grappling event will happen in Los Angeles on August 9. Stay tuned for more updates on the line up.
