We're just a shade over two weeks away from the UFC's big 4th of July weekend PPV, which sees Chris Weidman defend his middleweight title against Lyoto Machida, plus Ronda Rousey square off against Alexis Davis for Rousey's women's bantamweight strap.
The focus of the UFC 175 bout order is clearly the shock exclusion of Urijah Faber vs. Alex Caceres on the main card. Instead, this bout is headlining the Fox Sports 1 prelims, and it will mark Faber's first ever placement on the preliminary card in either the WEC or UFC. His career with Zuffa-owned organizations spans 8 years and 20 fights, with the Caceres fight as his 21st. Meanwhile, Marcus Brimage's bantamweight debut against Russell Doane will open up the PPV, followed by Uriah Hall versus Thiago Santos.
I can only rationalize this move from the standpoint of Fox Sports 1. The UFC feels that the top two fights command most of the attention, and even with the loss of the Vitor Belfort/Chael Sonnen/Wanderlei Silva triangle, it's the co-main and main event that they'll heavily sell. To attract eyeballs to the preliminary card, which undeniably lacks any sort of name value, they've put Faber vs. Caceres on Fox Sports 1, so that both prelim ratings and PPV buys have a good turnout. Otherwise, this fight is better than the first 3 fights on the main card.
