With regard to the UFC, I may be getting to the point of this being over as a hardcore fan. I’ve not seen a live event in over a month now and really I don’t think I can be bothered anymore. Last weekend was a great example of why things need to change or the interest level will drop almost out of existence.
I looked at the promo for 174 and it was the same tired stuff, some promo shows that felt half hearted, some fighters who were going to punch some people and some peripheral activity which was designed to drag me in, for what exactly I don’t know, I mean for a UK viewer in particular what are you selling that is of ANY interest to me? Once I have my BT sport contract (which I don’t and wont have) where does the UFC go from there? I already have fight pass and I can’t buy PPV which would be ridiculous as I know a ton of people over here who would pay for big shows if they existed, which they don’t.
174 was just a load of people I’m not very interested in fighting for something which I don’t overly care about, the whole, Chael, Vitor Wandy thing for 175 is a farce and has turned the sport into soap opera. Weidman is failing to ignite the fans and the UFC doesn’t promote him effectively. Have you heard ANYTHING about Jonny Hendricks recently? I’ve seen more about Georges!! Does anyone really care about the HW division? The addition of a women’s Straw Weight division, though completely valid for the sport is NOT going to add anything for anyone who buys PPV. It appears at the moment that the prelims which only the hardcore watch are where the real interest and action lies.
UFC fatigue is strong and in the meantime Bellator put out the single best promo I’ve seen in years with the Prindle v Thompson video, I actually laughed out loud, they completely know what thye are selling and if they go down that route and make cheap(er) ppv off the back of fun marketing then they have a winner. Market it as fun, market it as something to watch on a Saturday night and market guys people have heard of. Who cares if they are past their prime in the grand scheme of things?
Its not just about Bellator, the other guys out there have products now and they are making people interested in seeing those products. Personally I would LOVE to see Glory on mainstream TV in the UK and I think it could happen, televise Metamoris and ADCC and I’d watch it.
I’ve spent most of my life in and around combat sports, I’ve been watching combat sports since I was a kid and I’m genuinely excited by everything OTHER THAN the UFC at the moment.
