Join us tonight for episode 9 of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Edgar vs. Team Penn. The Ultimate Fighter airs on Fox Sports 1 starting at 10:00 p.m. ET. We'll have TUF discussion, right here at Bloody Elbow.
Listen, it's time to get real - this season sucks. Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn have both been professionals, which is good for coaching, but bad for TV. There has been little in the way of interest. And worst of all, the fights have just been bad. Carwin vs. Nelson levels of bad. How bad? Here's a stat for you - of the 7 fights so far, only one has had a finish. We've had three weeks in a row of three round fights, which on the one hour TUF means almost no time for anything but the fight. So, here we are - the last fight of the opening round. Can it redeem things? Let's see.
Grudge match! This is the fight they have been setting up for quite a few weeks, with both guys clashing on and off all season. Van Buren has come across as the worse of the two, and seemed headed for the Junie Browning role, but he's thankfully received little screen time until now. Clearly that will change this week. Fields has decent experience, with a number of fights and some quality opponents including Jesse Taylor and Norman Paraisy. He got into the house by defeating Josh Stansbury after a weird injury. Van Buren is 2-2 in Bellator and trains at Alliance MMA, which is a plus for him. He defeated Daniel Vizcaya, a solid fighter himself, to get into the house.
