Lyoto Machida says he knows how to beat Chris Weidman—but he’s not telling

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida believes he knows exactly how to beat middleweight champion Chris Weidman.

Lyoto Machida is certain he knows how to beat Chris Weidman, but has no intention of sharing his game plan with the media.

The former UFC light-heavyweight champion was slotted into the middleweight title fight against Chris Weidman after the Nevada State Athletic Commission decided to ban TUEs for Testosterone Replacement Therapy, which caused a domino effect that ultimately saw Belfort removed from the original title fight against Weidman.

Belfort was subjected to a random drug test administered by the NSAC three weeks before his removal from the UFC 173 main event. The result of that test was never revealed.

The title fight was scheduled to headline UFC 173, but it was moved to UFC 175 in Las Vegas after Weidman underwent surgery. Machida does not believe that Weidman is coming back too soon from his injury, and stated that as a champion, he knows to "never take risks."

"As a champion, I know he would never take risks if he really didn't need it," he said. "I don't think he will be in disadvantage because of the surgeries. He wouldn't risk his title, so I believe he will be 100 percent ready."

Neither the sudden substitution nor the rescheduling of the fight date has bothered Machida, and he has taken advantage of the delay to get extra training.

"The extra time to train was good, but at the same time it was not," Machida told MMAFighting.com. "I was training hard and would be ready to fight in May even though I got the offer with two months' notice, but I will use the extra weeks to work even better and get in there stronger."

The Brazilian believes he has the exact gameplan needed to defeat Weidman, although he refrained from sharing it with the media.

"I sure do (know how to beat him)," he said, "but I won't tell you how now [laughs]."

UFC 175 takes place July 5, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
