Mayweather vs Maidana: Riots break out at MGM after Mayweather vs Maidana fight

Ethan Miller

After a great night of fights, some fans appear to be unsatisfied. Riots broke out at the MGM Grand Garden Arena after Floyd Mayweather successfully defended his titles against Marcos Maidana.

Apparently the fans weren't altogether pleased with the result of the close fight between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana. Despite a very strong effort from Maidana, Mayweather took two judges' scorecards while one judge had the bout a draw.

Consequently, a riot broke out at the post-fight presser. Spectators took to Twitter to describe the mayhem.

A few bystanders even reported that a gun was discharged at the scene.

We can only hope that nobody is seriously hurt in the aftermath of what was ultimately a great fight. Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for updates on this wild post-fight situation.

UPDATE: Kevin Iole of has informed Bloody Elbow that there were, in face, no gunshots at the MGM in the aftermath of the fight, nor a brawl at the presser. There was, however, a dangerous "stampede" of fans leaving the arena.

Another patron shared some vivid descriptions of the carnage at the MGM, which apparently only has two public exits from the arena into the casino.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that dozens were injured in the deluge.

The crush of fans reportedly flooded into the media center, which was overrun with people, and at one point the doors were locked as order was restored. Eric Poleski, battalion chief for the Clark County Fire Department, has said in published reports that 24 people were taken to Las Vegas-area hospitals. . . . What prompted the sudden rush is not known; some speculation on the scene was that a loud noise similar to that of a gun being discharged might have prompted the crush of spectators running from the arena exit toward the hotel’s Garden Walk of shops and restaurants. Poleski later confirmed in published reports that the noise came from a temporary wall that fell to the floor.

If, as has been speculated, somebody did ignite fireworks at the arena to incite this panic, that's reprehensible behavior, akin to shouting "fire" in a crowded theater.

Bloody Elbow will continue to keep an eye on this story, but it is certainly reassuring to know that the reports of gunfire may have been misinformed.
