Floyd Mayweather didn't get many opportunities to show off his trademark style early in the fight, as Marcos Maidana bullrushed him against the ropes and hammered his body and head with powerful short punches. The rough and tumble nature of the fight led to several low blows, a tackle that nearly caused both fighters to fall out of the ring, and an accidental clash of heads that gave Mayweather the first and only cut of his long career as a prizefighter.
As the fight wore on, however, Mayweather began to pick Maidana apart with accurate body shots, counter left hooks, and his always unpredictable lead rights, always making sure to keep the jab on Maidana. Maidana, for his part, looked to have slowed considerably after about the fifth round, and though he never stopped coming forward, most of the later rounds were Floyd's.
The fight was close, but in the end two of the judges gave it to Mayweather, while one had it a 114-114 draw. Bloody Elbow has the full highlights of the exciting bout right here, courtesy of ESPN.
A rematch is already being talked about, and both fighters, as well as Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, seem to think it's a good idea, so we'll see if Maidana can turn the tables next time. It's certainly not a fight than anyone can complain about seeing twice.
