Mayweather vs Maidana results: Mayweather wins by majority decision in a terrific back-and-forth battle

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather had to dig deep to pull ahead of Marcos Maidana in the late rounds of this welterweight title bout. Maidana gave it his all, but it wasn't enough to convince the judges, who gave Mayweather a majority decision.

Floyd Mayweather def. Marcos Maidana by Majority Decision (114-114, 117-111, 116-112).

Floyd Mayweather had his composure and skills put to the test by Marcos Maidana, who brought everything he had against the champion. Vicious body shots sealed the first several rounds for Maidana, but Mayweather began to take over by the middle rounds.By the end of the fight Maidana had slowed considerably, and Mayweather was landing counter rights at will, after struggling to find his distance in the first half.

Maidana refused to give Floyd any respect, walking through counter punches and clubbing Floyd's ribs when Mayweather had him tied up on the inside. A few low blows and a tackle that nearly took both fighters through the ring ropes testify to the sheer roughness of this bout. An accidental headbutt even gave Floyd the first cut of his professional career.

In the post fight interviews, both fighters allowed that a rematch might happen. "If they want to do it again, we'll do it again," Floyd told Jim Grey emphatically.

Maidana wasn't so respectful. "Floyd did not fight like a man like I expected him to. . . other fighters respected him and didn't go toe-to-toe like I did." Trainer Robert Garcia claimed that it was Maidana who had to give the rematch to Floyd, since "he won the fight." Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy boxing also announced that a rematch to this controversial fight would be acceptable, to which Garcia replied, "Can we use our gloves this time?"

NOTE: Bloody Elbow user "sanre4l" has informed us that the in-ring translator didn't do such a great job of translating Maidana's actual words, which were more along the lines of "Floyd has never thought a man like me," which makes sense given Maidana's follow-up remarks.

An incredibly exciting performance that brought the best out of both competitors. A lackluster undercard belied the greatness of this main event, which was surely the closest and most exciting Floyd Mayweather fight in years.
