For those wondering about the possibility of Vitor Belfort taking consecutive fights at light heavyweight to secure a middleweight title shot ... wonder no more. At the UFC Fight Night Berlin scrum, White confirmed that Belfort vs. Chael Sonnen will be contested at middleweight and a title shot will be on the line only for Belfort, per Ariel Helwani's tweet:
White also confirmed that the Sonnen-Belfort fight would be at 185. When asked if it was for the #1 contender he said, "it is for Vitor."— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) May 30, 2014
This comes two days after Wanderlei Silva was removed from his UFC 175 fight with Sonnen after he reportedly did not submit an application for a Nevada license, as well as an apparent refusal to subject himself to random drug tests. Belfort stepped in and pending his license approval from the NSAC, he will be Sonnen's first middleweight opponent since the loss to Anderson Silva in their UFC 148 rematch. The Silva/Sonnen bout was supposed to take place at light heavyweight.
Should Vitor Belfort fail to get his license in 2 1/2 weeks time then the Sonnen fight will be scrapped and neither man will compete on the July 5th card.
It's yet another twist in this extremely wacky tale.
