Viktor Pesta believes it is his ‘responsibility’ to maintain the ‘good name of Czech MMA’

Debuting Czech fighter Vikotr Pesta discusses the lack of MMA popularity in the Czech Republic, and moving his training camp to Sweden to prepare for his UFC debut.

As the only Czech fighter currently in the UFC, Viktor Pesta believes he has a "responsibility" to prove himself and shine a positive light on Czech MMA.

The 9-0 heavyweight is scheduled to make his promotional debut on Saturday at UFC Fight Night: Munoz vs. Mousasi, where he will face Ruslan Magomedov on the preliminary portion of the card. Pesta is excited about his debut and prepared for it accordingly.

In order to steer his career in the necessary direction, Pesta needed to move his training camp to Sweden, where he trained with the likes of UFC light-heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson.

"I have to say that [MMA popularity] is not so big [in the Czech Republic]" Pesta told MMAboxing.ru. "That's actually why I came to Sweden. I wanted to train on higher level.

"I trained in Allstars training centre in Stockholm. It is a really high-level gym and a lot of world-class fighters are there. I trained mostly with Alexander Gustafsson, Ilir Latifi and Magnus Cedenblad."

Pesta is yet to pick up a notable win in his professional career. Since his debut back in 2010, he has managed three submissions and four TKO victories. There was an initial blemish on his record when he lost a controversial decision to Yousef Ali Muhammad, but the Swedish Mixed Martial Arts Federation overturned the decision after reviewing the bout.

While Karlos Vemola represented the Czech Republic in the UFC between 2010-2013, Pesta is the only active fighter from that country on the roster. He considers it his "responsibility" to maintain a positive image for Czech MMA.

"Yeah, now I am only Czech [fighter] in the UFC, so I feel some kind of responsibility for the good name of Czech MMA."
