In a not so surprising turn of events, Bellator Lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez is looking to leave the promotion after his next fight. The very public battle over his contract matching no doubt left a sour taste with the champ, and the additional perceived slight of making the Chandler/Brooks fight an interim title bout less than a week after notification of his injury was just added fuel to a blazing fire.
Last week, Bloody Elbow spoke to Eddie, who made it abundantly clear that he wanted Will Brooks to be his next fight since he pulled off the upset over Michael Chandler for the interim belt. He also stated that he had no say in who the promotion chose to match him up with, and that he never has.
During yesterday's edition of The MMA Hour, Ariel Helwani had both Brooks and Alvarez as call in guests. Despite some back and forth posturing, the two agreed that they should fight each other next, that it only made sense. Alvarez went a step further to state that he felt Brooks was the easier fight and that was the main reason he wanted it to be booked;
I could easily go to the media and day, let's do Chandler-Alvarez III. It makes more sense financially for me to do that. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying it's you. I'm trying to help you out. I'm trying to get you a title shot. And in all honesty, I'm doing it because I think you're the easier guy, and I am trying to get out of here easier.
When asked if he was serious, Eddie reiterated,
I do. I think Mike is a tougher match-up, so I'm trying to get the easier match-up here. You're right.
According to Alvarez, Bellator has yet to contact him regarding his next fight.
