I love everything about Daniel Cormier's fight game. Everything. He's burly, strong, in shape, and dominant on top. He's like a 21st century version of Tito Ortiz. Seeing him powerslam Dan Henderson will make the pay per view opening montage soon. But if he thinks ragdolling an old and over the hill Dan Henderson is enough for me to believe he can beat Jon Jones, well ... he has some work to do.
Joe Rogan said he had never seen Henderson manhandled like that before. But I have, we all have. After getting put to sleep and woken up in round 1, Jake Shields annihilated Henderson for four rounds. Henderson gasses and he doesn't like being on his back. Since beating Fedor Henderson has gone 2-4 and in those two wins, both against Shogun Rua, he got all kinds of ass kicked. Somehow Dan Henderson has made people believe he's still a contender, but he not. Not even close. In his second win over Shogun he was getting lit up the entire fight.
Cormier's two wins are against a nobody Pat Cummins and an over-the-hill Dan Henderson in the light heavyweight division. I am absolutely not selling him short but in this historic run Jon Jones has fought three strong fighters with wrestling as a base. Ryan Bader, Rashad Evans, and Chael Sonnen. All three, not even close. Cormier liked to use kicks to get inside on Hendo, but that won't work on Jones. His reach and length is so great that the stock Cormier will have to wade in to get to him. You never expect a dominant champion to go down until they go down. But the fighters that gave Jones the most problems, namely Gustafsson, match his reach. Jones like to set up and tee off in the time it takes for his opponents to find their timing on him.
Cormier is a fan favorite because he's almost the opposite of Jones. Where Jones comes off as fake and almost desperate to be popular, Cormier easy going manner and hard work seems to be more appreciated by the fans. He kind of calls Jones out on some of his stuff. He's the perfect foil in style and personality. But not in skill, not yet. Cormier won't have a reach or speed advantage, and I'm not even sure he'll have a strength advantage over Jones. Of course, Jones has to beat Gustafsson again so we'll see if we even get here.
If Jones and Cormier fight, I'll be rooting for DC ... believe that. But lets not get crazy yet. You won't ever see Jones leaving his chin out like Anderson did. This is the most dominate fighter in the UFC right now and two wins in his division doesn't yet make Daniel Cormier the man.
