UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has never defended his title in Las Vegas, but it looks like his first one will be made this August.
UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta told ESPN.com on Saturday the promotion intends to book the 205-pound title bout to a UFC 177 pay-per-view event on Aug. 30 in Las Vegas. The card is expected to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Jones (20-1) easily beat Glover Teixeira in April, winning a lopsided unanimous decision for his 7th consecutive title defense. Gustafsson (16-2) gave Jones the toughest fight of his career at UFC 165, engaging in a back-and-forth battle that saw Jones win a unanimous decision in one of the best fights (if not the best fight) of 2013. The Swede recently won via 2nd round TKO against Jimi Manuwa back in March.
If Jones agrees to fight Gustafsson at UFC 177, it would mean both August PPVs for the UFC would be headlined by rematches, as Jose Aldo is scheduled to fight Chad Mendes at UFC 176 on August 2nd.
