Jake Shields injured, out of WSOF 11 co-main event vs. Jon Fitch

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

An injury to Jake Shields means his World Series of Fighting debut has been delayed, and Jon Fitch needs a new opponent in July.

Bad news for former UFC welterweight Jake Shields, as Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting confirmed the news earlier today that Shields is injured and out of his scheduled World Series of Fighting debut against fellow ex-UFC title contender Jon Fitch.

Shields (29-7, 1 NC) was cut from the UFC after a decision loss to Hector Lombard at UFC 171 snapped his unbeaten streak at 4. He is best known for winning the Strikeforce middleweight crown after surviving Dan Henderson's 1st round onslaught and then winning a unanimous decision. Details surrounding the 35-year-old's injury are currently unknown.

Fitch (25-6-1, 1 NC) last fought in October, winning a split decision against Marcelo Alfaya. After his controversial release from the UFC in 2013, Fitch was dropped and then choked unconscious by Josh Burkman in his WSOF debut last June. The 36-year-old was scheduled to fight WSOF welterweight champ Rousimar Palhares on this card, but Palhares withdrew to take care of his ailing mother. WSOF officials are currently looking for a replacement opponent for Fitch.

World Series of Fighting 11 is scheduled for July 5th (the same day as UFC 175), with Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell squaring off for Gaethje's title. Former UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard also makes his promotional debut opposite Gesias Cavalcante.
