Join us tonight for episode 6 of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Edgar vs. Team Penn. The Ultimate Fighter airs on Fox Sports 1 starting at 10:00 p.m. ET. We'll have TUF discussion, right here at Bloody Elbow.
Last week, we hit the midway point of the first round, with Team Edgar and Team Penn now tied at 2-2. We also saw Corey Anderson emerge as an easy pick for one of the finalists. Coach B.J. Penn warned his team that they should never over-train - I'll leave you to analyze that yourself. Oh, and Frankie Edgar dressed up like a Ninja Turtle.
On we go to this week and tonight's fight:
Edgar's #1 Middleweight pick Ian Stephens earned that status with the most impressive victory to get in to the house, as he defeated former Bellator champion Lyman Good. Stephens is a former college wrestler, and used that wrestling to completely ground and control Good. Wrestlers tend to do well on TUF, and Stephens has the potential to go far in this tournament. Opponent Roger Zapata is the season's last pick, and stood out last week for his ridiculous argument that wrestling is super easy. (After all, you really only have to learn 2 moves - the single leg and double leg! Yes, he really did say that.) Now, he's going to get to test that theory. He has BJJ experience from the Renzo Gracie line, and defeated Tyler Minton in an unmemorable fight to get in to the house.
If I had never seen a preview for next week, I would pick Stephens by decision all day here. But that preview focuses entirely on the controversy stemming from this fight and how it is judged, with Dana White going nuts when the winner is announced. Based on that, I'm going to say Stephens controls the fight, but gets screwed and Zapata wins the decision. I'm definitely interested to see what the deal is here.
