Juan Manuel Marquez def. Mike Alvarado via Unanimous Decision (117-109x2, 119-108).
The historic Forum in Los Angeles, California has hosted the fights of some of the greatest Mexican fighters in the history of boxing, and did so once again tonight. Juan Manuel Marquez was in vintage form, landing 57% of his power punches on the face and body of the much larger Mike Alvarado. Marquez's jab was in rare form, and Alvarado was helpless to avoid the lightning combinations of the Mexican legend.
Alvarado was certainly game, as was expected. After Marquez bowled him over with a stunning right hand in round 8, Alvarado responded by knocking him down with a right hand of his own in round 9mi. Still, fans of Juan Manuel Marquez will know that Dinamita only becomes more dangerous after being hurt, and that was certainly the case tonight. Marquez fought a bout that, despite the knockdown, felt like an absolute shut-out.
With this win, Marquez is expected to fight Manny Pacquiao for the 5th time. After two controversial losses and a draw, Marquez handed Pacquiao a brutal knockout loss in their last meeting. When asked if he would be interested in another bout, Marquez said that he wasn't sure, but it's certainly the fight that fight fans, and Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank, want to see happen.
