The UFC's first trip to Poland may not be materializing as fast as many fans had hoped, but that doesn't mean that they're not stocking up on some quality prospects from one of Europe's major developing MMA hotbeds. And in a country with a lot of developing talent, Marcin Bandel may be one of their brightest young fighters. His signing was announced by his agent, Tim Lydecker, via Twitter on Friday.
Who is Marcin Bandel:
The 24-year old Drysdale Jiu Jitsu fighter will make his way to the UFC on the back of a 13-2 record. When not stateside training under Robert Drysdale, he is also one of the grappling coaches at La Familia MMA in Halle, Germany, where he has coached accused neo-nazi and failed UFC signing Benjamin Brinsa. After a pair of early career losses, he's been on a twelve fight winning streak, with a couple of decent scalps in Bartosz Fabinski and Musa Jangubaev. The rest of his record isn't terribly deep, mostly consisting of one-and done fighters and regional scrappers. It's his consistency that tells the tale, however, with every one of his wins coming by first round stoppage and each of the 12 in his current streak coming by submission.
What you should expect:
Bandel is a complete throwback as a offensive grappler in MMA. He reminds me a lot of guys like Marcin Held, or, more classically, Masakazu Imanari. He's a face forward brawler on the feet, throwing wide looping hooks in an attempt to get inside and connect with his opponent. He does have some power, so if guys just focus on blocking takedowns he can clip an unwary fighter. Otherwise, once int he clinch, he's not a takedown wizard, but is more than willing to dive on leg locks from which he'll flow to armbars liberally. Essentially, he's going to dive on a leg lock at some point, if you try to punch out of it he'll grab your arm and look to break it, if you pull your arm out, he'll go straight back to the leg lock. It's not always a recipe for success at the highest level, but it's always a recipe for fun.
No debut date or opponent has been announced for Bandel at this time, but to get us better acquainted, here's alook at Bandel's recent bout against Jonny Kruschinske.
