Injuries are piling up at an alarming rate. Maybe it's because spring is in the air, maybe it's something in the Xyience. In the midst of Josh Samman and Evan Dunham withdrawing from their upcoming fights, a top tier welterweight bout has fallen by the wayside as well. Mike Pierce, set to meet Demian Maia at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale on May 31 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been pulled from the fight due to a broken hand. MMAJunkie has the report.
Pierce was looking to rekindle his winning streak, after a loss to Rousimar Palhares at UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields. Pierce suffered a sprained MCL and torn ankle ligaments in the submission defeat, which saw Palhares released from the UFC. It was the end of a four fight win streak for Pierce, who will now have to wait some months more for a chance to get back in the cage.
I'd be surprised if the UFC can't find a replacement for Demian Maia to fight by the end of May. Welterweight is stocked full of fighters and I'm sure there are more than a few capable opponents outside the UFC who would jump at the chance for a last minute callup, even to face a top fighter like Maia. So, stay tuned as I'm sure updates will be forthcoming.
