Dana White: Age will eventually force Jon Jones to move to heavyweight

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

UFC President Dana White believes that Jon Jones will eventually move to heavyweight as age catches up to him.

While Jon Jones was quick to snub talks of a potential move to heavyweight last weekend, it appears that Dana White is still convinced that the 205lb. champ will eventually make the move up in weight.

The UFC President was at a press conference in Mexico on Tuesday, where he announced the details of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America, as well as the match-up between heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum.

One of the questions directed at White was about the hypothetical Velasquez vs. Jones match-up if the reigning light-heavyweight champ decided to move up. While Jones had recently discarded the idea following his UFC 172 title fight against Glover Teixeira, his boss considers it a possibility, but only when Jones is done with the potential title contenders in his division.

"Jon Jones has (Alexander) Gustafsson, possibly (Daniel) Cormier if he wins that fight (against Dan Henderson) - he's got a lot of guys lined up still." White stated at the press conference.

Dana also suggested that the move would become more of a possibility as Jones got older and less interested in cutting weight.

"The other thing is, Jon Jones is 26 years old. As he continues to get older, he will have a harder and harder time making 205 (pounds), which would eventually probably force him up to heavyweight. It's not the time for a Cain versus Jon Jones superfight."

Superfights have always been a discussion point in MMA, but rarely lead to any fruitful results. While there have been talks of potential superfights between Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre, as well as Silva vs. Jones, none have ever been close to fruition. The closest the UFC has come to achieving a superfight was between St-Pierre and former lightweight champion BJ Penn, which took place at UFC 94.
